Character Creation - Guide and Rules

Introduction

So you have chosen to venture out into the world - why? What drives you forward and gives you purpose and the drive to continue? Let's take a look and discover who you truly are and who you want to be?
Before we have a talk about the exact details, in a dedicated 1 on 1, please figure out the following.

Race, Backstory & Background

Whoever you want to be, there is a place you can come from. If we are playing in Hyperborea, then beast races like the tabaxi are mostly unheard of and most often considered to be the result from magic interference or even a curse or blessing from the gods. Tieflings are generally disliked in the Northern Realms and tolerated or not cared about anywhere else. Playing as a birdfolk is possible, but will be very interesting as they all suffer from the curse that lost them their voice, having them function just as the rgular Kenkun in mainline DnD.
Every official background is completely fine, if you want to use a homebrewed or modify an existing one, just let me know and we can work with each other to make it happen.
When it comes to your backstory, you can do as much as you want for the more open sandbox campaigns, or as little as you want, developing more throughout the actual play time. If your character comes from a specific part of the world, quickly read up on that area in the wiki (don't worry, just the basics) and keep it somewhat coherent.
Please remember to keep the backstory somewhat close to the level we will be starting at, speaking of...

Level, Class & Subclass

If I do not specify anything else, we will always start out at level 3. All classes and sub-classes from DnD 5e are allowed, with the understanding that you will not try to "break the game" with completely over-powered combos. If you want to use a (sub-)class from 5.5e, just tell me and I'll look into it, it is supposed to be compatible after all.

Homebrew/External Sources

If you want to use a homebrew class, send me a link, so that I can review it, to at least pretend that I tried to balance this. In the meantime, there is some pre-allowed homebrew:
