Illyrian Lowlands

The Illyrian Lowlands is a vast low lying tract of land, seeded with wetlands and swampy areas that marks the northern border between Tharos and the Phandar Hills in Dhabara.

Once a fertile plain, the area was changed during Dhamoc's Plague. The violent upheaval that came from the formation of The Earthmotes to the West and North completely changed the drainage patterns of rivers flowing from the Dragonteeth mountains resulting in the fertile basin filling up with water, eventually becoming slow moving riverways, wetlands, and swamps.

The lowlands teem with numerous species of flora and fauna. Some benign, some deadly. One of the more deadly species and definitely the most prolific, are the vast number of trolls that inhabit the area and give the lowlands their other name: The Trollfens

There are are no permanent settlements between Fort Redcliff at the base of the hills and Tharsis approximately 200 miles to the south though caravans that brave the road (when it's not washed out or flooded) often make semi-permanent rest stops at regular intervals to protect themselves from the local wildlife. The condition of the roads and the remoteness of the location make travel difficult at the best of times. Only the most hearty (or foolish) traveller spends time crossing the lowlands. Most people avoid it if they can, taking a ship from the capital to points north and back in usually less time than it takes to cross the lowlands one way.
