Bramiggs
Bramiggs' mother raised him on her own in Aranthia, by The Crater. While never rich, they weren't dirt poor either. When Bramiggs showed an interest in magic at a young age, his mother somehow found the money to set him up to go to a magic school. He was a curious kid and a quick study, and did well even among the rich and well-educated students there.
During Bramiggs' time at school, he discovered a love for games, especially cheating people with them. He was a tyrant at the lunchroom table, but it was all in good fun. He had a small group of friends, even though he was bullied for not being rich and for his race.
Him and his mother frequently sent letters to each other, where Bramiggs detailed his exploits, and she hers. After a couple of years, she started to get more secretive about what was going on at home, and eventually she stopped sending letters all together. When Bramiggs finally came home at the end of the term, all I found was a ransacked house and his mother's old lucky necklace.
After doing some investigating around the city, he discovered his mom had been doing work for a criminal organization to pay for the schooling. He looked into them further, and found the only way he could find his mom was to join up with these thieves for some subtle digging around.
Being able to do magic along with his swindling skills made him an asset, so Bramiggs rose pretty quickly in the organization. He discovered that his boss was the one who dealt with his mom. One day, Bramiggs confronted him about it. He simply laughed and told him he would never see her again. Bramiggs tortured him close to death, then left the city as quickly as he could with what he learned. This eventually led Bramiggs to King's Cradle, where all his leads have dried up for now.
