Empire of Lathlaeril
In ancient days, long before the destructive Illithid wars, the great elven empire of Lathlaeril rose from the ashes of the War of Ancients to conqueror near the entirety of the Radiant Nexus. For close to 70,000 years they ruled, bringing peace and prosperity to the Material Plane. But all Empires must fall, and Lathlaeril's time came during the reign of its 168th ruler, Empress Arryn Dorwenduil, the century the Illithid came from beyond the Sea of Stars...
Structure
The Lathlaeril Empire was, as the name suggests, ruled by an emperor/empress. Each emperor was said to be a direct descendant of the Moonlit King, Corellon, and thus their divine blood gave them the right to rule over the people of the Radiant Nexus. Next to the emperor's were their symvoluin (or advisors), a council of around 10 high ranking nobles and diplomats that would help and advice the emperor. Then came the noble families class, typically of dynasties elven blood who could trace back their ancestry to the feylords that came to the Nexus with Corellon. Then came the mages and clerics of the Empire, their magical capability was said to be a gift worthy of great wealth. After the magic users were the merchant and warrior class, who were said to be of equal levels but for differing reasons. Finally, came the common class, those that worked in the fields or did menial labour.
History
Over 80,000 years ago it is said there was a great exodus of beings from the Feywild, these beings were the elves and gnomes. The elves were led by Corellon the Moonlit King, son of Queen Titania and King Oberon of the Feywild. Corellon was the first demi-god to step foot upon the Radiant Nexus since the Ascension, some hundred thousand years prior, and his arrival was not well met by the inhabitants of the Material Plane. A great war had been raging between the dragons and giants for thousands of years, one that had seen devastating loses in both races populations. But Corellon and the elves arrival was a threat to both races and so they decided to band together to run them out of the Radiant Nexus. The two ancient races fought with the new arrivals for centuries, until there came a final battle. The dragons and giants stood at one side of the fields of Fililuin, Corellon and his elves at the other. The two armies charged one another, until half of the dragons, those of metallic heritage, turned towards the other half and charged them (this event is now simply known as the Metallic Betrayal). The elves used this as a chance to destroy their enemies, and so after an hour of intense battle they drove off both chromatic dragons and giant alike. Corellon himself is said to have slain at least thirty thousand giants and a thousand dragons, and this, along with his aid in bringing the elves to a place they could have rest, convinced his mother and father to allow him to ascend to godhood, taking his feylords with him as servants. After the battle, Hathranax, High King of the metallic dragons approached the victorious elves and told them that they had their blessing to take dominion over the Nexus, and that they were glad to pass the reigns of the Material Planes to such a noble race.
With their king now a god and no more major enemies in sight, the elves elected their first emperor, Imbryel Yinharduil, grandson of Corellon, who in turn named this new nation the Empire of Lathlaeril (the Empire of the Moonlit King). At the tip of the Dragon's Mandible Peninsula, the elves established the centre of their empire, Gwuinilid, which still stands today as a reminder of the elves glorious past. From that day forward, the elves drove their armies across the Radiant Nexus, although it would millennia before they had taken almost every square inch of the Nexus.
Once the Empire found peace, it grew into a prosperous and innovative nation. The magical advancements made by the magi of the Empire was unmatched. However, this magical energy wielded by the elves drew the attention of far off powers. 15,000 years ago, from beyond the Sea of Stars came the Illithid. Sadistic aberrations with aspirations of enslaving the entirety of the Material Plane. Their coming was unexpected and unwanted, which in turn meant that an effective defense could not be held. Elves were slaughtered in their millions, even the Empress fell in the end. But the people of the empire knew it was all over when Mystryl, Goddess of Magic, sacrificed herself to protect the rest of the Great Wheel from the Illithid threat, meaning no help could be given by Corellon and his Feylords. The eventual collapse of the Lathlaeril Empire after the death of the entirety of Empress Arryn's family, meant the end of the Illithid's first invasion. Those elves that remained fled behind the walls of Gwuinild and Ethealwan...
