Awe

The recent solar eclipse was a transformative event for those lucky enough to be fully within the path of darkest shadow. Even though it took place months ago, people are still talking about the experience. Everyone has a story to tell about how it looked and what they felt. Whether shy or outspoken, brash or quiet, when they talk about the eclipse it's in the same tone of wonder. Such is the power of awe.
Awe is a natural reaction to any beautiful, unusual, and extraordinary sight. Individually, people all have different thresholds depending on their preferred input sense, but like the eclipse there are some things universally awe-inspiring. The Dancinglight's Dome was one of these, reliably instilling awe in those seeing it for the first time.

Manifestation

The usual reaction to awe is to become immobile and inarticulate. Some may also cry, or giggle helplessly. After the initial sensation wears off people usually become extremely talkative, especially if there are others around experiencing the same event.   Awe is easily shared. When we see someone who has been clearly struck with awe, our instinct is to look around for whatever has caught her attention so that we can experience it too.

Localization

Awe is common to all humans, but not described in the same way. Valdians call it "akheyo," and think of it as a being instead of a natural phenomenon. It's one of the more benign of their shasfo, the kind that is thanked for its presence.   It's harder to know whether other species understand awe. According to Water Seekers who have known them, szageki have a similar reaction. Reports from the outpost on Tokled indicate that tkevsa are rarely surprised by anything, and when they are their reaction is anger.

"The moon goes dark on a regular basis, every other year or so. It's fascinating to watch. A handful of times in my life I've seen it go blood-red. That's a sight that fastens your feet to the deck."
