Grobbit Worm

Grobbit Worms are enormous burrowing predators living their entire lives beneath the sand. They are one of the only creatures in the Nightlight Zone with which we have limited information, as they spend almost their entire lives underground. Even if human technology could burrow underground efficiently enough, it would be too slow to catch a specimen in the wild. What is known is that they are ambush predators, hiding in the sand for the perfect opportunity to strike at their prey.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Grobbit Worm has a long body covered in countless armored body segments. These segments are made up of even smaller segments, and contain small spikes on all sides of the body. Their heads are compact, with large mandibles each nearly as long as the creature is wide, and five small eye stalks. Even today, nobody knows what these creatures' tails look like.

Genetics and Reproduction

While mostly stationary, these worms will sometimes burrow underground, and if they are not in search of new hunting grounds, they are in search of a mate. It is thought that these creatures meet underground, digging large underground chambers to move around in, somehow not disturbing the Pocket Caves. They will then lay their eggs underground, where no other creature can disturb them.

Growth Rate & Stages

Because no one will ever find their eggs, it is likely that these worms lay more eggs than they need, and the babies can then hatch and devour some of their siblings to sustain themselves until adulthood. Some specimens found on the surface have been smaller than most, most likely being juvenile forms. The juveniles will hunt many of the same prey as the adults, though they take some time to perfect their hunting skills. As adults, their mandibles will become strong enough to hunt just about any creature in their environment.

Ecology and Habitats

The Dunes of the Nightlight Zone are where these worms reside, and they spend their time buried in the ground, simply waiting for any large prey item to draw closer. If their hunting grounds don't turn out promising enough, then they'll burrow through the ground, and pop up in a different area. Strangely, the effects of the Dunes' sinkholes on these creatures is unknown, and it is also unknown if they can survive a sinkhole at all.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The Grobbit Worm feeds on Bullet Whales, Desert Wanderers, and Agelisichthys. They hunt by burying the majority of their bodies in the sand, with their mouthparts facing directly up. When a prey item passes above, they dart out and strike with their sharp mandibles. The only creature than can withstand the force of their mandibles is the Boulder Crab, which can lead to the worm's death. Though, even in death, the majority of their bodies will still remain underground.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Its eyesight is rather poor, and seems to rely more heavily on smell and hearing to sense its prey. Since this creature doesn't move around much, these are virtually its only used senses.
