Bullet Whale

The Bullet Whale is a majestic creature of the Arid Dunes, famous for it innate tendency to headbutt everything. This is its preferred way of defending itself, swimming extremely fast and dive-bombing its face into any other creature that opposes its presence. It's one weakness is that it doesn't think a lot of the time, preferring just to headbutt and ask questions later.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Bullet Whale has a compact thick body, covered in hard scales and hairs. Its face has several hard spikes coating its chin (for headbutting), and it has three jaws, all of which have bristles inside for filter feeing. It also has small eyes on top of the top jaw, as well as two pairs of flukes on its tail, the larger being more used for propulsion.

Biological Traits

Male Bullet Whales will often be slightly larger than the females, with more pronounced spikes, but are not usually any stronger.

Genetics and Reproduction

To put it simply, the Bullet Whale's reproductive strategy involves head-butting each other. When two Bullet Whales meet, they may simply swim together for a while to get use to each other's presences. Then, they'll engage in a short playful brawl, swimming far away from each other, before ramming back into each other at high speeds. Some pairs also headbutt each other into nearby rock formations, breaking them apart with sheer force of their heads. After their heads have been butted enough, they'll mate right away if they find each other's strength exceptional. These creatures give birth to live young, and parents will take turns watching the young.

Growth Rate & Stages

Baby Bullet Whales start out looking much like the adults, spending all of their youth near the seabed. They will constantly be watched over by their parents, with one always taking a rest on the ground, while the other actively swims around the family. Occasionally, the parents will take their young out in the open to find swarms of krill to feed on, where they can also learn to use their famous head-butting skills. As juveniles, they'll go through their headbutt training much more frequently with their parents, preparing for adulthood. Once they get old enough, they'll leave their parents for good, and succeed in putting their head-butting to good use.

Ecology and Habitats

Bullet Whales can only be found in the Arid Dunes, where they travel in the open waters high above the sea floor, either by themselves or in small groups. Some of these pairs have been observed playfully head-butting each other just for fun. The only reasons they will touch the ground are when they have to defend themselves against threats, or when they are protecting their young. They will prefer to hide their young behind large rock formations if they can.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Bullet Whales are filter feeders, and exclusively feed on swarms of krill that live in the Dunes. Most will travel great lengths to get this krill, but rarely spar with each other over food. When a larger predator comes near during feeding, these creatures will most often defend themselves with a good headbutt or two, attempting to simply chase away the predator rather than kill them.

Biological Cycle

The spikes on their heads may gather grains of sand in between them over time, and some of these creatures will even try cleaning them on rocks, although their heads are not very flexible.

Additional Information

Social Structure

These creatures appear to have some form of sociality, as there have been some found in small temporary groups with other members of their species. They have also been found playing with each other, either engaging in races or brawls, or simply nibbling each other's heads. They most commonly help each other survive by taking turns head-butting their opponent, should any show up, usually displaying headbutt superiority to their group members.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

This creature's sight is rather poor, and it prefers to use its hearing to get around, especially when dive-bombing into threats. It also feels a good amount of force when it uses its favorite defense tactic.
