Ship's Locker - Guide to Equipment Storage and Armory

How to Read the Tables

The tables of equipment, armor, and weapons have a few common elements included in them. Additional, more item specific aspects of item tables are included in the Armory and Equipment articles.
Name: The name of the object in question.
Min TL: The Minimum tech level at which an object can be obtained. This can be stretched somewhat via prototypes and early models (with their associated penalties). This also represents the tech level at which an object is at its “normal” price. An item can be purchased at a higher TL than it becomes available at its regular price (forgoing the discount mentioned in the Cost section). While this usually doesn’t confer gameplay benefit (aside from better ergonomics or workmanship), forgoing the discount makes the item effectively the TL at which it is purchased for the purpose of TL related interactions and dice rolls.
Weight (KG): The weight of an object in kilograms. An object with — has no discernable weight. Items in tables without a weight column are assumed to be weight —. If one elects to play without encumbrance rules, this piece of data can be safely ignored.
Cost (GCr): The cost in Guild Credits, of an object at its “Minimum TL. Objects can be purchased above their minimum TL at a discount. In most cases this will be 10% per TL to a maximum of 50% off at 5 TLs above the minimum, however, certain exceptions apply.
Legal Category: The legal category of an object. Legal categories have an impact on who can purchase, store, and maintain certain items in legal marketplaces. If one lacks qualification for a particular item they must turn to the black market to find a supply with all of the dangers entailed. This does not always directly correlate with the local law level of a specific planet, however, travellers with items from a legal category they are not entitled to access will likely face additional scrutiny or legal sanction if caught with it. This will be explained below.

Legal Categories

Category 1 - Unrestricted

Category 1 items are generally safe items that almost anybody can purchase or use. Aside from very specific jurisdictions, unrestricted items can be obtained legally anywhere without a license. Though these items are almost always legal, black markets can frequently exist for them as criminals are all too happy to sweep up any source of good credits.

Examples
Most consumer goods, some medicines, most melee weapons (though a rare few exotic melee weapons are of a higher category), archaic ranged weapons, nonlethal weapons, light civilian grade ground vehicles, very light body armor. Unarmed adventure class (sub 1.000 ton) starships and smallcraft. Consumer grade robots and augments.

Category 2 - Civilian

Category 2 items are items that are usually legal, but require most people to demonstrate safe use and a license to use. For game purposes, anyone possessing the relevant skill at 1 through formal training is assumed to have this documentation, and anyone with skill level 0 could pass a course to obtain the documentation required. In most societies arms and armor of this level are considered the “polite maximum” where someone spotted with more dangerous weapons or heavier armor who isn’t obviously a mercenary, security officer, or other member of an armed profession is bound to attract unwanted attention from most law abiding citizens and law enforcement.

Examples
Hazardous consumer goods, prescription medicines. Revolvers and most non-automatic pistols, semiautomatic, bolt action, and antique rifles, nonautomatic shotguns, and civilian grade light body armor. Heavy civilian ground vehicles, civilian aircraft, civilian watercraft, civilian starships and spacecraft, certain light spacecraft weaponry (beam lasers, burst lasers, laser drills, container launchers and sandcasters). Brain altering cybernetic augments and industrial robots.

Category 3 - Paramilitary/Corporate

Category 3 items are specialized or dangerous items that require not only proof of competence, but proof of suitable need. In the case of weaponry and armor this would include bonded security, mercenaries, and other members of armed professions and their employers. For non-weaponry related items, most corporations and non-governmental organizations would have the necessary “need” for a category 3 permit. Thus typical travellers could obtain a Category 3 permit in most jurisdictions reliably.

Restricted narcotics. Light automatic weapons (Submachine guns, automatic rifles, automatic shotguns, most laser weaponry, less than lethal grenades and explosives. Light military grade body armor. Police grade ground vehicles, watercraft and aircraft. Softskinned, unarmed military ground vehicles. Light military smallcraft (light and ultralight fighters or equivalent), most other light starship weaponry (basic missiles, laser and missile barbettes). Most militarized augments, security robots and androids.

Category 4 - Military

Category 4 items are those which have largely military applications or which can cause a lot of damage if not left in check. They are therefore sold almost exclusively to mercenary companies, some bonded security companies, and few else, though the occasional independent mercenary in between companies might be able to purchase category 4 items from a trusted vendor. Legal sellers of category 4 items will take extra care to make sure licensure is in place, as they can be severely penalized for illegal actions undertaken with class 4 items that they sold.

Category 5 - Strict Military

Generally highly dangerous or very specialized gear that would have an almost exclusively military application. Category Five items can be bought by governments, or mercenary units accredited by the Galactic Mercenary's Guild only. As they are only sold to these clients they tend to be sold in a manner meant to appeal to them (buying in lots, needing assembly etc.).
