Spinward Urean Republic

우레안 노동자 공화국

A large, and relatively powerful state, despite its relatively low state of development, the Spinward Urean Republic has become a symbol of a uniquely Urean Nebula Stelsoc societal mode, and is the most powerful republican state in the Nebula. The Spinward Urean Republic does participate in the same military ritual as the other major states in the region, the Urean Kingdom and the Cormorant Principality, though it benefits from mass conscription of Lancer units that allows it to sustain better, and even deploy its military on more traditional campaigns outside the Urea Nebula.

Government

The Spinward Urean Republic is a vanguard party state dominated by the Urean Popular Worker's Party which took power during the state's formation and has ruled alongside satellite and partner parties ever since. It is dominated by the legislature the Congress of Deputees which also controls executive functions via a select council from among its senior members. The UPWP developed the Ureanist current of Stellar Socialist thought and supports the development of the state through a managed, mixed-market economy. The government supports regional elections for deputies among the leading party, and with the satellite and partner parties, which often represent the interests of different sectors of the economy. Intraparty elections can be quite competitive, though no challenges to the UPWP's status as the vanguard of the state are tolerated.

Culture

The Spinward Urean Republic is dominated, by descendants of settlers from the Korea on Old Earth. However, the region that would become the republic more diverse over the later age of unity, both as a result of new immigration, and an influx of refugees fleeing the Jred. The Republic has encouraged a highly communitarian culture since its inception, encouraging Red Urean citizens to participate in their local communities culturally, politicially, and socially, with more introverted tendencies being viewed with suspicion as "antisocial behaviors".

History

The territories that would become a part of the Spinward Urean Republic were initially settled via a charter to the Korean governate (formerly the Korean People's Republic), though efforts to terraform the various worlds of the charter region were stymied by the nature of the Nebula. Early life was difficult for the new inhabitants of these worlds, and lack of funding as, its backer, the Korean Governate struggled with economic woes back on Earth. As a result the development level of the mandate's area remained comparatively underdeveloped well into the settlement of the region. As humanity descended into the Third Great Human Civil War, some of these worlds were thrown into the thick of the fighting as the gateway to the wider Urea Nebula was a major strategic objective between these two forces.   As the Stellar League consolidated power, conditions gradually started to improve with mass investment in at least some the gateway systems as the jumpgate network expanded in the later days of the Age of Unity. However, the Stelsoc movement did successfully manage to establish roots in the region as the development served almost exclusively to transfer wealth back to Sol, and the inner colonies. As with most of the Urea Nebula's worlds the Spinward borderlands weathered the Jred Scourge well, with a modest influx of refugees fleeing the invading Jred. However, the collapse of the Stellar League following the Great Cataclysm threw the region into chaos briefly.   The worlds of the Spin Urean reach were relatively quick to recover compared to many other societies thanks in large part to the relative social cohesion of the peoples living within the region. Once Jumpspace travel became safe enough to permit lower tech vessels to travel via jump, a congress was established to draft up a new constitution for a provisional Urean state in the absence of a central government. Worker's federations proved to be the dominant faction in the convention, and Red Urea was established as a vanguardist Stellar socialist state. The Republic's early years were difficult and strict adherence to vanguardist principles proved difficult to maintain, and thus a compromise, Ureanism was born, with Red Urea adopting a mixed-market economy and allowing satellite parties to spin off from the Urean Popular Worker's Party.   In recent years, the Urean Republic has steadily developed its core regions, while also slowly expanding to other, culturally similar independent systems that were isolated at the edge of the Urea Nebula. It has also occasionally, come into conflict with its neighbors the Urean Kingdom, and Cormorant Principality, developing a Lancer corps along similar lines to those of its regional rivals. Red Urea has become more interesting in seeking international partners, looking at the possibility of joining the Nova Luanda Pact in light of the growing influence of supernational organizations after the end of the Long Night.

Demography and Population

The Spinward Urean Republic maintains a modest population in the low billions. This population is highly concentrated on the primary worlds of the most heavily populous and industrialized systems within it. The largest population centers are clearly Hanhoe, Dandong, and Pyongyang. Seoul and Wonson both maintain modest populations by comparison, and Daegu is a small world primarily used by the military and the Galactic Surveyor's Guild. The first wave of settlers of the Red Urea came primarily from Korea, and though the core worlds became more diverse over time, its hinterlands, due to relative isolation have remained relatively homogenous.

Territories

The Spinward Urean Republic maintains a modest territory, spanning ten parsecs in area, of which slightly more than half of which contain populated star systems. At this time, Red Urea has not expressed any interest in further expanding its territories, as its resource base is more than sufficient to achieve their goals of defending and developing existing territory. Most of the primary worlds of Red Urea are relatively pleasant to live on with a fair amount of healthy ecosystems, though the Daegu System has a highly corrosive atmosphere, stymieing settlement efforts and limiting them to large organizations with need to control the infrastructure.

Military

The Spinward Urean Republic maintains the second largest standing military in the Urea Nebula second only to the Urean Kingdom. Its posture is relatively defensive, and its army is by far and away the largest of the Urean ground forces with an elite Cadre of Lancers, backed up by a large conscripted force with a defensive posture. It maintains a modest fleet of escort and patrol ships and light cruisers, most of which are remnants of the SFC Urea formations which were stationed in the region, with a support fleet of transports used to move Lancer formations into designated conflict zones.

Technological Level

Red Urea has an advanced core territory of industrialized worlds both of which are Stellar Era. However its outer regions are for the most part, locked into a Semiferal, Industrial Era or Early Spaceflight Era technological base. Historically, these regions were entirely dependent on imports to sustain industry, but development efforts have paid off to some extent, and are ongoing to improve the ability of the outer worlds to build and maintain their own agricultural and resource extraction tech.

Religion

The Urean Republic is a relatively irreligious with a high population of atheist. The Republic is, at least officially, a secular state, allowing the free practice of any religion, but in practice sponsors anti-religious practice across much of its territory. Despite a low level religious persecution, the Republic maintains sizable religious communities, primarily traditional Earth religions with Buddhism representing a large minority of the population, Hangul Christianity is the second largest, with other religious communities relatively small by comparison.

Foreign Relations

The Spinward Urean Republic has historically be a relatively isolationist and neutral world when it came to geopolitical affairs, seeking to focus on internal development over external conflict. As the Long Night came to an end and interstellar communication became safer and faster however, isolation proved an increasingly difficult challenge. Red Urea therefore has become more interested in seeking out partners, primarily reaching out to friendly Stelsoc nations in the coreward expansion. For the most part, Red Urea has avoided open conflict, but historic rivalries with its neighbors the Cormorant Principality and Urean Kingdom have resulted in intermittent low intensity conflict.

Laws

The Spinward Urean Republic is a mid to high law level state, with a fairly high degree of variance between systems as regional authorities are given a reasonable degree of latitude to control affairs as they see fit. Generally speaking, there are a lot of commerce controls for outsiders, and relatively strict laws on armaments. Regular citizens go relatively unimpeded in their daily lives however. Noteworthily, Red Urea has protections for psionic people, and encourages refugees from its neighbors who actively repress them to move into the Republic.

Agriculture & Industry

The Spinward Urean Republic is economically focused on self-sufficiency and has largely achieved this aim, with its smaller agricultural systems readily supporting its industrialized systems which in turn produce most of the equipment used by its agricultural sector. This economic model was mostly a closed circle until relatively recently, when economic reforms and a more interconnected galaxy caused the Republic to shift increasingly towards an export model, primarily trading with other Stelsoc states.

Education

The Spinward Urean Republic maintains a relatively complex public education system up to the tertiary level. Students are given broad educations in a least two languages (usually three), mathematics, sciences, and mechanics for free up to the secondary level. Those who seek to advance their studies can go to technical or medical universities for free, and to arts universities for a nominal fee. The public school system is somewhat traditionalist with difficulties accessing the most advanced equipment, but the theoretical teaching is some of the finest in Civilized Space.

Infrastructure

Red Urea is very behind its neighbors in the department of interstellar infrastructure. Despite its well developed intra-system infrastructure, the country has only a single connection via the interstellar Jumpgate network, making it a slow and laborious process to move things even through the compact territory of the republic. An initiative is underway to expand on this network, though the required partnership with the Galactic Surveyor's Guild is still under negotiations.
