Melee Weapons Database

Melee weapons are close combat implements of death and destruction. Until the advent of gunpowder, they were the most common form of weaponry available, but quickly fell to the wayside as guns become more capable and more common. Most that survived had some amount of secondary utility, quickly becoming tools rather than weapons. In the modern era of shipboard boarding actions, the evolution of melee weapons was restarted as many boarding teams wanted a way to engage in the close quarters of ships without seriously risking an accidental decompression event. They have since regained some utility in this respect as well as becoming status symbols for those of rank.

Melee Weapons

Traditional melee weapons that stab, slice, crush, or do other more exotic things to people and objects they come into direct contact with, melee weapons are the basic force multiplier found around the galaxy from the most basic frontier settlement hiding in caves, to special forces teams silently opening necks with monomolecular blades.
Melee Weapon Descriptions
Anti-Armor Flail: Anti-armor flails are improvised anti-tank weapons utilized primarily by insurgent forces. It consists of a short shaft attached to an explosive charge. When swung the flail sticks to the armor of a vehicle it hits, at which point a timed charge gives the user just enough time to escape before it detonates.
Arc Field Weapon: Arc Field Weapons are rare and highly advanced weapons that instead of having a traditional blade consist of a handful of conductive wires that, when charged create an energy field that is capable of cutting through almost anything. They are difficult to parry, requiring an equally advanced weapon to do so. Arc Field Weapons, due to their immense destructive potential, are usually classified as milspec energy weapons in most jurisdictions.
Assault Pike: The humble assault pike is, like the anti-armor flail, an improvised anti-tank weapon, essentially a shaped charge attached to a long stick. This weapon is often used en masse by improvised militias. The assault pike is supposed to be jammed against an armored target, detonating on contact. In theory the shaft is supposed to create enough distance to protect the user but this is not always the case. Assault pikes get lighter and more manageable at higher tech levels.
Battle Axe: Battle Axes are hand and a half axes that are effective and cutting through armor. They are frequently used as an infantry weapon on feral worlds. However, they disappear with the advent of gunpowder. Fire axes and other heavy utility axes can be used as improvised battle axes when the need arises.
Bayonet: Bayonets are bladed weapons that are fitted to the end of a military rifle. Bayonets are used as an emergency defense weapon when mid to high tech infantry find themselves in a close engagement. There are four types of bayonet in common service. The traditional blade or rod bayonet is a low to mid tech implement that is introduced as firearms become commonly adopted. The monobayonet is an improved version with a monofilament blade better at cutting through armor. The static bayonet is a powered version of the bayonet that emits an electric charge weakening molecular bonds. Lastly, the chaindrive bayonet is a miniature chainsaw that serves more as a means of intimidation, and a breaching tool than as a viable combat weapon.
Blade: The blade is a short sword between approximately a third and two thirds of a meter in length. It can be used for stabbing and slashing, and may have an elaborate hilt. Blades are often worn as badges of office in more traditionalist navies.
Brass Knuckles: Brass knuckles are a heavy knuckleduster that increases the force of a punch, while also protecting the hands of the person wearing it. This basic unarmed weapon is a favorite of petty thugs throughout the galaxy, and therefore has been subjected to some legal restrictions in many jurisdictions. A heavy or hard toed shoe can also serve the same function as brass knuckles.
Broadsword: The broadsword is an especially heavy, two handed sword, often a meter and a half or more in length. It sees use in low tech armies but is primarily a weapon utilized by some professional duelists.
Chaindrive Axe: The chaindrive axe is an axe whose blade is a series of chainsaw-like teeth powered by a compact, but powerful motor. This powerful weapon is capable of cutting through light armor with ease, and brutally shred the flesh of its victims. The motor can remain powered for thirty minutes at a time, with an unpowered axe serving as little more than an especially heavy, and poorly balanced club.
Chaindrive Sword: Smaller than the chaindrive axe, the chaindrive sword uses a somewhat weaker motor embedded in the hilt of the blade. Though not as powerful as the larger axe, its sawing teeth are still dangerous and intimidating. The chaindrive sword can operate for thirty minutes on a single charge, becoming effectively useless when the power runs out.
Claw Gloves: Claw gloves are heavy gloves with retractable claws. They come in a number of varieties. The basic version of the glove has finger tips with hardened, edged, metals that deliver a brutal slash. With better material sciences a more advanced glove can deliver a more powerful attack. Monofilament gloves have the blade refined down to a single molecule and can cut through most light armors. The most advanced version of a claw glove is essentially a miniature arc field weapon that is virtually impossible to parry by most weapons.
Club: A simple shaft with a weighted end, clubs are a very basic weapon that is utilized at many tech levels, from simple shafts of wood found on feral worlds, to the high tech poly riot batons used by police officers on mid and high tech worlds.
Cutlass: A heavy one handed sword with an eye towards slashing. The cutlass is a favorite of marines who make heavy use of the blade in boarding actions where a firearm or energy weapon might cause inconvenient holes in the hull.
Dagger: The dagger is a short, easily concealed, bladed weapon usually less than a third of a meter in length.
Entrenching Tool: An entrenching tool is a militarized shovel, with a reinforced haft and unusually sharp blade. Some entrenching tools are double ended with an adjustable head for a pick or saw blade or other simple tool.
Field Blade: The field blade is a short, machete like blade utilized by people who frequently have to clear brush in the line of duty. Field blades commonly have a small toolset encased in the hilt of the blade.
Field Knife: A small utility knife frequently used by soldiers who don’t have a knife-bayonet. Many field knives have an array of compact field tools in the hilt.
Gravity Hammer: More accurately considered a breaching tool than a battlefield weapon, the gravity hammer is a heavy sledgehammer with a gravitic engine inside that twists the gravitic forces and enhances the striking forces. The hammer is unwieldy against anything smaller than a vehicle but strikes with staggering amounts of force on anything it does make contact with.
Great Axe: The great axe is a heavy, two handed axe that is traditionally found on the battlefields of feral worlds. However, it can breach modern light armors just as effectively making it an unlikely boarding weapon.
Hatchet: A light, single handed axe that is frequently used as a sidearm or as a utility axe by peoples across the galaxy. Hatchets are frequently included in survival kits, and other utility toolsets.
Knuckleblasters: Sometimes called the ballistic fist, knuckle blasters are a generally illegal hand weapon consisting of a reinforced glove attached to a short shotgun barrel. The shotgun is triggered by the user punching a target delivering a brutal shotgun blast at point blank range. The gun must then be reloaded.
Lance: The lance is a heavy spear designed to be used from horseback. When used on a mount it can pack a serious punch, but is a somewhat unwieldy spear when used on foot.
Long Blade: Long blades, sometimes called longswords, are hand and a half bladed weapons that are approximately two thirds of a meter to a meter and a third in length. The long blade is a favorite among noble warriors on feral worlds, and among historical re-enactors.
Mace: A more advanced form of the club, the mace is a crushing head on a short shaft that can be wielded in one hand and usually used as a sidearm by low tech troops. Some higher tech versions of these take the form of especially heavy batons.
Monoblade: A one handed bladed weapon with a nanometer thick edge that produces an extremely sharp edge. The monoblade is favored among marines with access to extra wealth to burn, as its extremely sharp edge cuts through most armor with ease, but is easy handling makes it more controllable in the confines of a ship.
Monofilament Axe: The monofilament axe is the axe form of a monofilament blade. It trades controllability and ease of use for a noticeably more powerful cut.
Piston Fist: A heavy duty metal gauntlet attached to a powerful piston that extends whenever the user punches something, the piston fist hits with incredible force sometimes enough to break through walls.
Piston Spear: The piston spear is a spear with a powerful pneumatic motor that can be activated for an extra punch on contact. Without this pneumatic action the piston spear can be used as a regular spear.
Psi Blade: The psi blade is a sword whose blade is modified with psychoactive crystals. These crystals can be used by psionically gifted individuals to enhance the striking power of the blade. There is a baseline enhancement that exists for all psions, but a gifted psion can expend their energy to further enhance the strength of a psi blade.
Psi Dagger: The psi dagger is a shorter form of the psi blade that is favored by psionic assassins as a seemingly innocuous but highly damaging weapons in the hands of the right user.
Rapier: A “refined” bladed weapon popular among nobles and duelists, rapiers are very handy for parries.
Sabre: A cutting weapon favored by low and mid tech cavalry, the sabre is generally used as an alternative to the blade or to the cutlass, with a heavier strike.
Sap: Consisting of a cloth bag containing a heavy weight the sap is an old fashioned tool for waylaying and rendering unconscious an unaware target. It cannot effectively be used to stun if the target is aware however.
Sledgehammer: A heavy, two handed club, the sledgehammer is frequently used as a demolition tool but can be absolutely devastating to unarmored or lightly armored targets if it lands a blow.
Spear: A very basic weapon humanity has used since prehistory, the spear is simply a shaft with a sharpened tip or a forged spearhead. The spear is one of the most versatile weapons humanity has conceived being a throwable weapon, a staff, and a sharp stabbing implement all in one.
Spiked Knuckles: Spiked knuckles are knuckledusters with spikes mounted delivering a nasty stab in addition to the force of the punch.
Staff: A simple weighted length of wood, the staff is a deceptively effective peasant’s weapon. In trained hands, and wielded two handed, a staff counts as a shield in addition to counting as a staff.
Static Axe: A small axe with a generator electrifying the blade. The static axe’s electrical charge weakens molecular bonds of any object the blade passes through. This allows the static axe, while charged, to cut through a great deal more armor than a regular hatchet. The power cell lasts for thirty minutes becoming a regular hatchet when not charged.
Static Blade: Similar to the static axe, the static blade is an electrically charged sword with a powerful electrical field to break down molecular bonds. The power cell lasts for thirty minutes, becoming a regular blade when not charged.
Stone Axe: A primitive axe made from stone and wood, the stone axe is a simple and easy to improvise weapons used more often in survival situations than anything else.
Stunfist: A high tech gauntlet with a power cell the issues a powerful shock capable of stunning people. It is a nonlethal alternative to other gauntlet weapons.
Stunstick: A short club with a powerful electrical power cell that shocks those hit with the club, those struck with the stunstick are likely to be stunned by it.
Tomahawk: A shorter militarized version of the hatchet, the tomahawk can be used as a tool, but its main purposes is as a melee sidearm, the tomahawk can readily be thrown as well, being well balanced for the task.
War Pick: A light sharpened mace, the warpick is designed to punch through the armor of its equivalent tech level, it retains this ability even with lighter modern armors.

Shields

While technically a defensive implement rather than a traditional weapon, shields can be used to bash in the hands of a skilled user.
Shield Descriptions
Boarding Shield: A boarding shield is essentially a piece of mobile cover utilized by boarding teams unlike most shields, it cannot be used to parry, but provides prot +8 cover to those standing behind it. Most boarding shields have firing ports that the wielder can shoot a firearm through.
Buckler: Bucklers are small lightweight shields intended to provide the coverage of a shield without taking up the hand that is wielding it. A buckler can be used with two handed items and weapons, but imposes a DM-2 penalty to checks made to use items while using the buckler.
Expandable Shield: Expandable Shields make use of advanced metallurgical technologies to compress a boarding shield into a number of sizes. An expandable shield can be transformed by electronic or vocal command to take the size of any shields from the buckler to the boarding shield and anything in between.
Gravitic Shields: Using parditech gravitics technology, the Gravitic shield projects a confined energy field from a small bracelet or armband, the shield it projects is otherwise like a normal shield.
Large Shield: An especially heavy shield that cannot be used to shield bash, for sufficiently strong users, the large shield provides extra protection.
Riot Shield: A mid tech shield made of fire resistant plastics or polymers, it functions as a shield but is lighter made and resists ranged attacks slightly better. It is also fire resistant.
Shield: A basic shield, be it a kite shield, a heater shield, a round shield or any other type.

Specialty Melee Weapons

These weapons are a bit more exotic than their "normal" counterparts, requiring specialized skills, or at least technique, and focused on specific use cases. Special Melee Weapon Descriptions
Garrote: A piece of cord or wire, often attached to handles for easier use, the Garrotte applies damage over time, as the cord slowly strangles the target, or severs the windpipe and key arteries.
Monofilament Garrote: Using a monofilament cord, this version of the garrotte is more deadly to the target, but more dangerous to the user with a good chance of severing the user’s fingers, limbs or other parts.
Shock Whip: The shock whip is a weapon poorly suited to the battlefield. Instead it typically is used as a torture instrument where it proves highly effective at eliciting responses to interrogation question.
Whip: Whips are difficult to use as weapons requiring specialized practice to use them effectively. However, they are quite efficient at grappling at a distance, making them effective at disabling foes nonlethally. If a target is grappled, the whip cannot deal damage to that target while they are grappled.
