Engineer's Rig
Engineer's Rigs are an invetion of the Starborn that has successfully been reproduced in wider society. It was initially created as a means of centralizing all of the tools a spacer would need onto a single harness. Due to the hard scrabble life of starfaring nomads it was frequently necessary to effect repairs without returning to the ship to change tools. As a result, Starborn mechanics would create a harness to wear over a vacc suit or a Montovaya, that would have virtually every tool a starship mechanic would likely need allowing a spacer to do everything in a single spacewalk under most circumstances.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
The Engineer's Rig is a large, bulky harness the contains several toolsets, an electronics toolkit, an engineer's tool kit, a cutting torch, welding kit, patch, and a dispenser for bulkhead patches. Attached is an advanced computer system that can be used with expert software or management software to make using the tools easier, and a grav belt that grants powered, reactionless flight while spacewalking. The entire harness is built around a powered exoskeleton that bears the weight of the harness when in gravity. The core is powered by small power cell that can power the exoskeleton for up to 36 hours though extended use of the grav belt, computer, or any other powered feature will drain the battery significantly more quickly.
Manufacturing process
Early engineer's harnesses, those constructed shortly after the Great Cataclysm were manufactured by skilled artisans. However, one enterprising starborn eventually set up a manufacturing corporation (Estrateck), which became the first industrial scale manufacturer for Engieer's harnesses. In the current day, Engineer's Harnesses are produced by artisans, by fabrication machines, and by more traditional factory production.
