Daemado Islands (tɛ.ma.do ˈaɪ.ləndz)

"We shouldn't live here. It's not a place for people. We shelter in the heart of the storm while we have to - but only until we can reclaim our true home."
Jeonjin Sanghaeul, leader of the Imugi

The Daemado Islands are an archipelago located within the Musahae, a particularly dangerous region of The Middlesea. According to Chilseongsin legend, the islands were once used as a prison for the wild and dangerous Tokkaebi - a collection of malevolent spirits who would wreak havoc on the world if left unchecked. These demons can wander freely throughout the Musahae, but they are tethered to the Daemado: at a certain point, they reach the end of their chain and can go no farther. In their rage, they have made the islands practically uninhabitable - summoning storms to batter them, waves to flood them, and lashing out at any ship foolish enough to approach.

Even before their imprisonment, the region was perilous, prone to devastating hurricanes and mysterious disasters that swallowed ships without warning or explanation. The combination of the Tokkaebi and the archipelago's natural hazards ensured that none but the foolish, the reckless, or the desperate would ever attempt to settle there.

The Imugi are not foolish. But they were desperate and reckless in the aftermath of the fall of Seomna, when they fled from the invading Empire of Wamato. They sailed into the Musahae, hoping only to survive long enough to escape their pursuers. When the Tokkaebi came for them, they bargained with a few of the spirits for protection against the rest.

Before their imprisonment, the Tokkaebi had been worshipped by some among the Chilseongsin of the Seom Islands, and the old stories spoke often of their thirst for blood offerings. The refugees from Seomna agreed to pay for their passage in blood - an agreement that was later extended to permit their residence on the larger islands of Daemado. It was then they took the name Imugi, a Rengota word meaning sea serpent, and began their campaign to drive the Yanjin, and all humans, from the Seom Islands.

They now operate as pirates and raiders, seizing prisoners and goods to sustain their cause. They liberate enslaved Chilseongsin whenever they can, and sacrifice their captives to the Tokkaebi. It is this blood that allows the Imugi to sail through the Musahae and survive within it while all who pursue them are torn apart by the sea.

It is a devil’s bargain - but the Imugi know that the true demons are not the Tokkaebi. The true demons are the Yanjin who stole their home, and they will do what they have to in order to drive them out.

Geography

The exact number of islands in the archipelago is impossible to determine. There are at least seven hundred actual landmasses, most of them tiny and incapable of supporting permanent settlement. But the total may be as high as nine hundred. The uncertainty arises from several factors: some islands only emerge at low tide, during certain storms, or can only be found when a thick fog conceals them - often discovered only when a ship runs aground. Others are cursed by the Tokkaebi and drift through the sea, deliberately colliding with ships or even with each other. Still others are mere phantasms, illusions that often conceal whirlpools or other deadly phenomena.

Maps of the region rarely attempt to chart every island. Instead, they focus on the seven largest, with only the most ambitious cartographers daring to include the fifty or so mid-sized islands - those with more than ten square miles of land, but less than one hundred.

The major islands of Daemado (sorted by size)
This table includes all those islands in the group with an area greater than one hundred square miles.
NameArea (sq mi)Coordinates
Inmuldo 950 30.87° North, 24.61° West
Heukbaekseon-do 824 30.82° North, 25.45° West
Jangsanbido 611 27.12° North, 20.53° West

Gugeongso-ui Seom 180 30.47° North, 22.3° West
Cheonyeogukdo 113 29.32° North, 21.95° West

The islands are named for the particular Tokkaebi who rule them, and the Imugi have made pacts of residence with the two largest and westernmost: Inmuldo and Heukbaekseon-do. The other large islands are not safe to visit, even for Imugi ships, and are rarely approached by anyone.

What an inspiring idea! I really liked the imprisoned spirits and the havoc they are causing. You actually gave me an idea for one of my islands in Kena'an :) Very nice!

Well, not a place to visit for a holiday, that's for sure. I can see why the Imugi feel they chose the lesser evil though.   So curious about some of the other islands that are too dangerous to explore.

Lesser? Maybe. More amenable to their goals is probably closer.   I'll plan on writing more about the specific islands later - they're prompt-fodder.
