Iron-Breathing

The most recent industrial revolution experienced by the people of Isturoth, the boom in technological innovation and scientific progress, is due largely to the invention of the first steam engine, often referred to as a "iron-breathing" or "Keldakhmai", named for the God of Invention, Akhmat. This name personifies the machines, treating them as if they are living creatures. The rhythmic hiss and chug of a steam engine is likened to the breathing of a powerful beast made of iron. This name is most used by common folk who are in awe of the technology's life-like sounds and power. It feels both majestic and a little intimidating.   This incredible innovation has propelled Isturian society forward immensely and is now leading the way for future inventions that can utilise the engine. Coal-fired steam engines (or Iron Hearts) are driving the economy and opening the way for conveniences never before dreamed of, thanks to the Obsidian Collective of Ironstone, the organisation responsible for its spread.   The use of boilers and pressurised steam has long been feared for being excessively dangerous, however the boom in popularity of the Keldakhmai has also led to inventors and engineers attempting to implement safety systems that reduce the risk of casualties and user error.   While it is still a new creation, the potential applications are nearly limitless and have already seen use in manufacturing, agriculture, mining and transport. Steam-powered water pumps are allowing mineshafts to be dug even deeper to provide more coal. The coal industry too is experiencing an unprecedented growth because of this emerging technology. More mines than ever are being dug to fuel the coal-fired machines being developed, produced and implemented in every class of Isturian society.
Discovery
The process of using steam as a basic mechanism has existed for centuries, but it has largely been pioneered by Kaizhan, the Heart-Forger, someone seen as the "Mother of Steam".
