Aethelas
Thousands of years ago, the people now known as the Skadi, the Isturians and the Dread Elves were the Humanoid Species. This group comprised the vast empire called Aethelas in the north east corner of the continent. For many centuries, this early monarchy grew in size and power, ruling with absolute power.
This changed when a malignant disease, the Withering Plague, swept through the kingdom, leading to its collapse and its people to scatter and resettle new lands. What is left of Aethelas is now known as the "Plagued Lands", where tainted wilderness has enveloped the ancient ruins of a once proud and powerful empire.
Structure
For centuries, Aethelas was governed out of its Capital City, with smaller cities overseeing their local territories. Leaders of municipalities would often make trips to the Capital to answer to the King and receive their edicts.
Geography & Climate
All of Aethelas occupies a temperate space on the continent. It is walled in by mountain ranges on the mainland, which has likely helped to stop the spread of the plague beyond its borders. The rest of the kingdom has been dominated by hilly meadows and dense forests. Swamps are not uncommon, however these places have been noted to be the most effected by the Withering Plague. The humidity and climate of the swamps have allowed curious strains of the plague to emerge. Vegetation, instead of withering, has mutated, creating wild and dangerous forests of toxic, alien plants and fungi.Culture
Aethelas was always a proud and arrogant kingdom full of snobby city-folk and mistrustful farmers. They were very independent and maintained a tight stranglehold on their borders and trades. It's people were highly pious and reliant on their faith to provide for them, which allowed corruption and crime to secretly flourish under the guise of organised religion.
At the time of its collapse, the systems tying Aethelas together were ready to crumble, leaving its people to fall to ruin.
Public Agenda
The people of Aethelas were lost in their pride, fiercely denying any wrongdoing or sin committed. There was always a tendency to avoid confrontation or dealing with problems that arise, instead burying them as inconspicuously as possible.
This was also fed by the importance they put on their religion. It was often believed that dedication to the gods was paramount and any indiscretion was a blemish on how they viewed you. Their sanctimonious attitude played into their fears and desires about how one is seen in society.
