Tiefling

Tieflings are thought to originally descend from Fallen Celestials, corrupted by the influence of the Material Plane. They are thought to have succumbed not only to negative emotions, but to carnal desires, though nobody is entirely sure of the truth of the matter. Tieflings originally only had a single variety, exhibiting a corrupted variant of their ancestor's Celestial power, however over time, some Tieflings were exposed to the Planes of the Elemental and Para-Elemental, changing them and their magic.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Tieflings are bipedal Sapients characterised by horns, tails, and fanged canines. While 70-80% of Tieflings present with goat-like legs, some Tieflings have legs that are more Human in appearance, and their bone structures can vary depending on which type of legs they present with. Many Tieflings have rigid tails, which means that their spine continues into their tail in the same way that a cats' or dogs' would. However, some Tieflings present with prehensile tails, which are boneless and made completely of muscle, making them more similar to tentacles. In terms of musculature, Tieflings are on par with Humans, though do have additional muscle groups to account for the tail. Some have a slightly different layout of facial muscles depending on their horn style.

There is no set structure for horn, tail or ear styles amongst Tieflings, and they can present with a wide variety of styles depending on subspecies and bloodline. Tieflings are known to have additional erogenous zones on the upper underside of their tails, with the exception of Crystal Tieflings due to their crystals surrounding their skin.

Biological Traits

Primal

The "original" Tiefling, Primal Tieflings tend to exhibit resistances to Radiant or Necrotic damage and display a variety of innate magical abilities.

Fire

Fire Tieflings are infused with the energy of the Elemental Plane of Fire, making them resistant to fire damage, and they often posses fire-related magics.

Air

Resistant to thunder/sonic damage, Air Tieflings show abilities that manipulate the air or allow them to fly, similar to Elementals of the Plane of Air.

Earth

Tieflings infused with the Elemental Plane of Earth have tough bodies that are resistant to bludgeoning damage and magic that allows them to manipulate plants and the earth.

Water

Water Tieflings can breathe both air and water, are resistant to cold, as well as having water-based magics similar to Elementals of the Plane of Water.

Storm

Infused with the Para-Elemental energies of the Storm Plane, which sits between the planes of Air & Fire, Storm Tieflings have resistance to lightning damage and exhibit lightning abilities.

Magma

Magma Tieflings are resistant to fire and exhibit abilities that resemble liquid flame or explosions, which are typical of Elementals from the Para-Elemental Plane of Magma, between Earth & Fire.

Steam

Resistant to fire, Tieflings infused with the Para-Elemental Plane of Steam, which sits between Water and Fire, display an unusual set of magics that relate to both steam and fog.

Crystal

Crystal Tieflings are considered one of the most beautiful types of Tiefling in existence, are resistant to sonic/thunder damage and show abilities that lean heavily into the Para-Elemental energies of Crystal, which sits between Air and Earth.

Ice

Another beautiful type of Tiefling, Ice Tieflings embody the powers of the Para-Elemental Plane of Ice, between Air and Water, being resistant to cold and showing ice-based magical abilities.

Mire

Mire Tieflings are inflused with the energies of the Para-Elemental Plane of Ooze, sat between the Planes of Water and Earth, and are resistant to acid damage with acidic and poison-type magics.

Genetics and Reproduction

Tieflings can reproduce with most Sapient, bipedel, mammalian species, save perhaps for Animalfolk, and the Tiefling Heritage is generally Dominant, meaning that children born of one Tiefling parent will still most likely present as Tieflings. Gestation for Tieflings is typically longer than Humans, taking nine and a half to ten months.

Growth Rate & Stages

Tieflings mature at the same rate as Humans, becoming adults at the age of 18 and reaching full physical maturity around this time. They are born with horn nubs, rather than whole horns, which begin to grow out at around 2 years of age. They reach full style and size by the age of 18.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Tieflings are omnivorous by nature, but preferences for food and drink can vary greatly between individuals.

Biological Cycle

Many Tieflings experience a form of shedding, which is where the outer layers of their horns (and other body parts, depending on their subspecies) flake or peel off in order to reveal healthier, newer growth beneath. The process is painless and generally lasts up to a week. Most Tieflings only shed once a year, but some will shed twice.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Tieflings will adapt to the social structure within which they reside, which can vary depending on where in the world you are. It is generally acknowledged that Tieflings are not defined by their Fallen heritage, though some places still look upon them with nervous caution.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Some types of Tiefling present with harvestable byproducts upon themselves, such as their horns, but these can vary from Tiefling to Tiefling.

Facial characteristics

Most Tieflings present with Human or Elven-type faces, though it can vary depending on their bloodline. All Tieflings have fanged canines, and depending on both their subtype and horn style and placement, some can display additional ridges or protrusions across the forehead.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Tieflings possess Darkvision and some have superior hearing. Most Tieflings have some form of innate magical gifts known as "Legacies". These Legacies can vary depending the heritage of each individual Tiefling, but if a Tiefling comes from the bloodline of two different types of Tieflings, they will only ever present one type of Legacy.

Civilization and Culture

History

Tieflings are believed to have originated from the union of Mortals and Fallen Celestials, especially Ferai. It is believed that the Infernal tongue is a Mortal dialect of Lumenprose, which is related to Shadowtongue.

Nobody is completely sure where the first Tieflings originated from, but as a species they are not as common as Humans, Elves or even Genasi. Until recent decades, Tieflings in Antirso were almost unheard of, but they are decidedly more common in Tordronnen.
