Krys Nemoc

Often thought of as a myth, the Krys Nemoc is a pandemic of the old world. Those who are infected by it are exiled from society and often die alone. However, after large outbreaks of this highly infectious disease, survivors of it may band together to create their own societies.

Causes

When small rodents, animals and sometimes insects somehow come into contact with this disease, they become carriers for it. Upon biting their victims, they infect them in what is believed to be an irreversible mutation.    No one knows where the disease itself came from, but many top scholars believe that it is magical in nature, and that has died out and been brought back numerous times.

Symptoms

Those infected with Krys Nemoc are painfully mutated into a hybrid of their past selves and whatever infected animal bit them. Along with the transformation, many victims are affected with insomnia, memory loss and other issues.

Epidemiology

Depending on what species is infected, it can spread in mildly different ways. For instance, if rats become carriers, then much of a city could become infected overnight. However, if an animal in the wild became a carrier, it could have a very small impact on a population.

History

Seen throughout the continents, this disease has clearly been around through the millennia. Many locations have had multiple encounters with the disease, some minor and some large, while other vast territories may have had zero interactions with it. It has been a prevalent danger in the empire of Phirus however, and many of the infected have formed their own communities in the slums of many of her cities. Fortunately for the rich, it is has rarely if ever affected them, but it can tear through the inhabitants of a poor population.

Cultural Reception

All victims of this disease are feared and ostracized. Exiled from the normal world, and deserted by their prior families. Any animals that may be deemed carriers of the disease are quickly killed en mass, and there have been various local ethnicities of rats and bats that have been completely wiped out because of this.
