City of Legush

One of the three Ancient Elven city states in Musmer, Legush is a city filled with trade and magic. Situated on the western bank of the Ligis River, Legush has been a center of arcane prowess since its exponential rise in influence in the 2nd Millenium AE. While its past history with dark sorcerers still taints its image within the minds of many, Legush still stands as one of the wealthiest places in all of Ki.

Structure

Legush is ruled by the "council of three" as it is called. A council of three high priests of Anki rule over the city, guiding its religious festivals and enforcing its laws. Unlike the other two cities of Eridu and Urk, Legush seems to lack any formal "nobility" but instead the most influential individuals are either clergyman or high ranked members of trading guilds. Slavery is widespread although those enslaved tend to have more rights than in neighboring Urk.

Culture

The culture of Legush it deeply tied with magic and trade. The city is renowned for its powerful mages and rigid houses of magical studies and the arcane arts. Unfortunately, due its darker past, Legush still holds the stereotype of being a center of "dark arts" where the law against dark magic is bent to produce power wizards and Sorcerers. The Patron Gods of the city are Utu and Na, twin gods viewed as a "ying and yang" representing the sun, moon, light, dark, justice and punishment. Their Festival of "the Eternal Twins" is the single largest sacrificial festival amongst the Erimerian Elven city states and includes 100s of Elven or Human Sacrifices. The other major festival within the city is the "golden goose festival" where any slave is selected to live like a noble for 30 days before being sacrificed to ensure "good trade".

History

Legush's origins ca be found in the early days of the Erimerian Elves expansion post flood. Founded in the year 315 AE as trade outpost. Its position along the Ligis River led to its growth into a major center of trade, attracting merchants and craftsman from across the Land of Ki. However, Legush's influence arose from its deep connection to the arcane arts. It became renowned for its prowess in magic, attracting talented wizards, priests, and sorcerers. By the second millennium AE, Legush had grown exponentially, rivaling even Eridu in power and influence.

This golden age came ti an end with the rise of Sarthor-Bel-Insul, a priest of Legush who secretly worshipped the dark god Pludes. In 1908 AE, Sarthor seized power, plunging Legush into a reign of terror. He corrupted the city with dark magic, sacrificing newborns and transforming those who survived his rituals into necromantic apprentices. His actions ignited the Brothers War, a conflict that pitted Elf against Elf for almost 100 years. Legush became a symbol of darkness and chaos.

Ultimately, Sarthor's reign was brought to an end by the heroic Shugi-Sha-Su, who led the forces of the free Erimerian Elves and the Dwarves of Sussak in a final attack on Legush in 2011 AE. The city was sacked, Sarthor was slain, and the Cult of Pludes was seemingly destroyed. Legush emerged from this dark period, eventually rebuilding and reclaiming its place among the Elven city-states, although its reputation as a center of dark magic never went away. It participated in the Neo-Erimerian Empire and later, during the Period of Stable Caution, Many of Legushin Elves became influential advisors in the human kingdoms. In the current Period of Great Struggle, Legush, like other cities, faces new challenges however it remains a center of wealth and trade.

Demography and Population

The population of Legush is seen as somewhere in between that of Eridus and Urks and while it may not be as populous as Urk or as influential as Eridu, the population of Legush is seen as extremely wealthy.

The vast majority of Legush is of Erimerian Elven stock however a sizeable minority of Akkardian Humans live within its borders as due Elmradi Dwarves who ventured to the city as traders and merchants.
