Giant's heel

Barren deep crater with very steep walls stretching for miles in circumverence littered with cave openings at the base. It was from these caves where the main swarm of deep orcs came from, dealing a crippling blow to the elvish capitol. The caves are rumoured to contain a vast treasure troves full of forgotten elvish artifacts. The crater has one entrance wich is situated at the western wall which is not as steep and caves can be accessed through this opening. Water forms puddles at the bottom, but most flows in the cave systems.   The legends said about the origin of this crater mention the great hero Karn the Giantslayer, who was once defeated by a trio of giants here. The giants after locking him in the cave with a boulder fought among themselves for the right to devour the legendary hero. Their battle was imense and raged for three days and nights, forming the crater. When the fight stopped the hero was torn appart by the victor.

Geography

Eastern direction from the elvish lakes about half a day trip north from the old Troll bridge lies the great canyon known as the giant's heel. The pit is over 40 meters deep at the edge and the walls are steep and rugged. The bottom of the canyon contains several former stalagmites which were shaped into obscene sculptures and obelisks. The largest in the middle is 25 meters high and depicts a scene from orchish legend of the first swarm. The evidence points to once a huge karst cave just bellow the surfice. At the edge of the pit stands former elvish fort Zel-Tar. The citadell of elvish capitol with glamorous walls of living wood, now a ruin beyond recognition. Western wall landslided into the pit and thus created the only access point without steep cliffs.

Fauna & Flora

The land inside the canyon is barren rock as it is too cold and shaded for most vegetation to grow. Given this some algae and lichen grows on the rocky pillars, but is systematically scraped of. Cracked walls provide good oprtunity for various species of birds to nest. Huge colonies of falcons are welll established in the northern wall as it is exposed allways toward the sun. At bottom in middle of stagmite sculptures only moss and fungi grow.
