The Bright Scroll
What is the Bright Scroll?
The Bright Scroll is a branch of The Torr's Mercy, the charitable organisation set up by The Knights of the Torr in Amotorr, The Torr's Mercy. The other two branches are: the Whitebranch and the Grainhart.
The Whitebranch offers medical and spiritual aid, while the Grainhart works very much like a traditional charity, giving away time and resources to the most needy.
The Bright Scroll, on the other hand, is a dedicated group of Deskers and Keepers who help the people of Amorvale with all their scribing. Villagers from Benamor and the surrounding hamlets and villages are welcome weekly in an office (the Scroll Nook)near Amotorr's gate. There, a Wiseman or Desker will help write letters and missives for the price of an offering to Brigand - whatever the supplicant can afford.
The Brightscroll is also present in Benamor during the days of the Fayres throughout the year. The Bright Scroll is also a way for the Knights to be aware of what is happening throughout the vale, though the Knights are sworn to secrecy over their scribing unless it endangers the safety of the Vale and Alven.
The Brightscroll, and the Wisemen at large also tutor and foster bright children from the Vale who would like to sit the The Assays when they come of age. The youngsters, from the age of 10 or 12, are fostered, brought up and educated within the sanctuary. Some keepers would like to see the development of a day school where youngster of the vale could go back to their families at night - this initiative is for the moment blocked by Amotorr's more traditional leaders such as the High Seer, himself, Lochan Stonesworn.
Currently, 8 children and teenagers reside in the Nursery, the youngest being 12 years old: Ashaden Brayfort (Clan Eaglesham). Ashaden is a very active and boisterous child. He is often seen darting in and out from under Seers' feet. He has become page to Woden Feldnor, the Torr's Elder Skoler as Ashaden is not - very much to his chagrin - of age to become an Abet yet.
People of the Scroll
The leader of the Knights is also Woden Feldnor, but he does not have time to dedicate to the Bright Scroll's endeavours. In his place, Avalis Foxhollow, his second in command and also a Knight herself oversees the charity's works.
The main drive behind the Scroll is actually a desker. Deskers are in a special situation in Amotorr. Deskers are disciples who have not become Oathbound Seers for one reason or another, but decided to stay in Amotorr. They usually work in the Bookhoard and the printing room. Creston Ferncairn is a young Desker, recently knighted.
Creston used to be one of Woden's Abet. The Elder Skoler has always recognised Creston's martial abilities and set of skills - which are not really suited for the Sanctuary of Amotorr but are perfect for the Knights of the Torr.
Avalis leans heavily on Creston to run the Scroll Nook surgeries. Creston is often found on Brigand's day in the Nook helping out or coaching new recruits. Crestion is the defacto ears and eyes of the Knights and is very good at recruitment for the Knight's Mercy, and finding out what is going on in Amotorr and Amorvale at large.
Working with Creston (and in love with him, or at least having a crush on him) is a young Oathbound Seer, named Merry Terron. Merry is a few years younger than Crestion and just succeeded in his tests to become an oathbound seer. Merry still does not know what Tua or Treba (House) he would like to join now he is oathbound. He would like to see Creston as a mentor. In his turn, Creston (having failed his oathbound tests) does not see himself 'mentor' material.
To make things more complicated between the two men, Merry comes from a wealthy, influential southern clan: Clan Botterfyre. He is a distant cousin to Galatis Mielika Swanth, and both met when Mielika, Creston's friend, introduced Merry to him. Creston needs to be careful to keep his secret work with the Knights (see The Knights of the Torr) from both Merry and Galatis.
It is to be said - it is unusual to see lower-rank Deskers get so much attention from higher ranking and up-and-coming Seers. His friendship with Mielika is seen with suspicion from her minders, and the two have often to meet in secret. Lately, Mielika has not been able to talk to Creston, and has seemed cold towards her former friend. Is she turning into another haughty Grovian?
