Kelp Keeper

The Kelp Keeper, Phoca symbioticus, is a traditional freshwater otter that has undergone a profound transformation to host an entire ecosystem of aquatic plants that have integrated seamlessly with its physiology. The creature's dense, dark fur provides an ideal substrate for various species of freshwater algae, moss, and small ferns that have evolved to live in perfect harmony with their aquatic host.

The crown of verdant foliage that sprouts from the creature's head and back creates a living garden that provides the animal with supplemental oxygen through photosynthesis for long dives and distributes nutrients and spores throughout the waterway. This allows the Kelp Keeper to remain submerged for hours by breathing through its botanical passengers. It secretes bioluminescent compounds that attract fish and aquatic insects, creating a mobile feeding ground that benefits both the Kelp Keeper and its plant companions. It is effectively an ecosystem engineer through its constant redistribution of nutrients and creation of fertile micro-environments wherever it travels—a creature that enhances, rather than dominates its environment. These creatures also serve as an indicator of water quality and safety, as their botanical symbionts would immediately react to any contamination. The plants growing on the creature also provide valuable medicinal and nutritional resources when carefully harvested.
