Operations

Hello, I have been told that you wish to tour the facility and what it does. Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Ayrn Fieldscales. I am what you would call a primordial human, though I use that term with some resignation, as I am a Fae. I use it for you simply because the Fae vaguely resemble Humanity that you know, yet our forms vary widely due to what we chose to focus on, as our Queen wished our focus to never slip in any of our pursuits. I am the Prime Engineer of the Operation, I oversee the day to day operations of the facility and ensure that it functions smoothly.

Any misstep in our duty adds extra strain to the Queen as she will have to shift some of her energy toward fixing the imbalance. Therefore, our mission here is this: Reuse and transmutation, sustain the plane through diligence and progress. We have taken much of the machinery off a few choice Ash Bringers to build the initial systems that govern the environments and chemical properties of this pocket dimension. These systems have long since been enhanced, expanded and upgraded to increase the efficacy of our work and the scope of impact.

Chiefly, the Operations regulate all waste water, waste streams, atmospheric filtration, desalination, chemical engineering, chemical synthesis, as well as regulating the temperature of this world. There are several of these structures on each of the Floating Continents, all interconnected through pipeline and communication networks. Though a greater amount that is considered intermittently critical is teleported to where it is needed.

Purpose / Function

As stated before, Young One, the Operations are multifunctional in their scope of work. Let us begin with somewhere, as all these facilities are just as important and interconnected as the next. If I may add, it gives a full view of just how many processes our dear departed gods governed without so much as a thank you from us ungrateful Children.

Waste Water: Storm

Let us begin with the waste water treatments, and how they make their way to our facilities. Under each and every paved surface, I will not use the term constructed as the entirety of The Elsewhere is artificial, under each city there is a vast network drainage. Each source is carefully kept track of, each dripping line, each leaky structure only adds to the strain on the Queen for that is material and energy she needs to somehow replace.   The storm sewers are made to always pass through several steps before reaching us here. The first step is collection, as the storms are often violent over the interior of each continent, the cities have made great efforts to collecting as much of this as possible. They pass through grated structures in each and every street, and allyway to make their way to vast sediment deposition cisterns beneath each sector of the cities. We do this to collect as much sediment and chemical erosion from the stone of the cities to be cleansed and reused in the fields of Aleglsia. I should note that Aleglsia is the main continent that produces the vast majority of the food for The Elsewhere.   That sediment is stripped of all salts/metals to be used for manufacturing as well as a certain amount of it is used to table salt is appropriate. These cisterns are then fed into the many lakes and ponds that ring each of the cities to allow biological processes to decompose any organic matter that may have made their way into the water. These ponds also provide parks and public spaces for the general population to use. Though we also use each of the water systems to grow fisheries to keep nuisance insect populations low. When the fishery has reached a certain population density after careful population analysis, they are harvested from the non-breeding stocks down to a level where they can self regulate for a few years before the next harvesting.   The top layer of that water in all these ponds is skimmed off through weirs and dams to provide both energy through a network of turbine systems, that are then channeled into the non-potable water systems to the Operations. Where we take all that water and put it through filters, chemical treatments, and sterilization to then be piped back into the cities as fresh useable water. Those filters are taken to the labs to have their filtrate transmuted into useful components for society as well. The effluent from the chemical treatment is also given this same process.

Waste Water: Black Water

The actual sewage of the Citadels is given much the same treatment as the storm water, however. Before it ever makes it to the ponds and lakes, it undergoes a few extra processes. It actually enters the Operations nearly immediately, where the solids are allowed to settle and those solids are taken for sterilization then composting. The black water effluent is boiled using the driver engines of the Ashbringers, and that steam is pressurized to turn power producing generators deeper in the Facilities. Once the steam has cooled, is it allowed to fall as rain in our rain domes that contain a truly immense carbonized and copper infused filter. The air in these domes are filled with a mixture of chlorines and fluoride for sterilization purposes.   Once they proceed through the filters, they given a reverse osmosis treatment before being allowed into the ponds and lakes. Effectively, we are securing all of the material out of the black water before treating it again. We cannot have any waste here in the Elsewhere, there is no new material or energy coming in. Furthermore we cannot ask Alnya to produce more, she already has too much to bear.

Air Filtration and Weather Regulation

We took for granted the thermodynamics of the old world, and it too us a few years to figure our how to create our own weather here. The Weather is regulated by a system of volcanic systems to create temperature disruptions that cause the atmosphere is begin churning, we have also set up heat sinks below the Continents causing the cross winds that arch over the Isles. The Operations dictate the temperature of the volcanic interactions through a constant nuclear reaction in heart of those mountains, the speed of the wind is entirely dependent on this temperature imbalance, depending on the weather even we need to create.   Clouds are created though, as I'm sure you've noticed by the two massive stacks in the heart of the Operations. One is built for intake of air, meant for filtration, the other is for discharge. First humidity is fed into the atmosphere through several of lakes being drained and vaporized by a few of the Ashbringer drivers. I should note, that the entire function of these lakes is solely for this purpose and serve no environmental usefulness. They are kept intentionally sterile. Once the atmosphere has reached the humidity targets have been met in the designated zone, a stream of silver particles are fed into the air. Once this occurs cloud formation begins, and the storm is allowed to grow. Precipitation happens, and we have produced the weather as needed.   The atmosphere is filtered though a vast siphon network below the Citadels, stripped of any pollutants, particulate material, and biologic material. The filters are, as you might suspect, cleaned and all material is used in other processes. While the greenery that we have made for the plane, does do it's job quite nicely, not a single bit of it natural. So there are processes that we have overlook throughout time, as such things like metals and complex carbon compounds are readily dealt with by the planted environment. At least not yet, our geneitics labs are working on a few different species to deal with this.
"Now hold on, Prime Engineer. Why not use magic to do much of this yourself? You are True Children, unlike me. I have done almost every one of the processes by arcane means before, so why not use them?"   "That. My dear little goblin, is a fact I will address. Us Children are fairly well sanctioned off from each Domain. I am a Child of Alnya, a begin of logic and Balance, as well as Earth. I may be a child of a god, but I am nowhere near Ascension like some of our other residents are. Anlyth, Taneth, and Y'vitol are the only beings here in the Elsewhere that could be considered gods besides Anlya herself. You are a descendant, of not only The Great Mother, but a Shadow Touched Child. With Eons of mixing magics and powers throughout the bio-systems of the Shattered world."   "I don't think I follow all the way..."   "Let me explain it this way, YOU are FAR more versatile than 99% of the citizens inside the Elsewhere. I can do much of the sediment cleansing through magic, but cannot treat the waters, cannot treat the air, and I certainly have no power over the weather like you do. The amount of time and technical knowledge needed to do all these things through the use of magic is immense, and we would need much of the population to be constantly doing so. So therefore we rely on a mix of Arcane systems and sciences. It is simply more energy efficient than using magic. Beyond that, our growth as Children is stunted to our need to give a portion of our Divine Spark each passing season to sustain this world."

Power Generation

"There can be enough of those reactors nuclear or otherwise, as well as passively productive as they may be, I doubt those hydro-electric turbines placed everywhere actually provide the Elsewhere with enough power to do all things even a sing Operation is doing."   "You would be correct, as well as remarkably observant. I mentioned before that part of our Divine Sparks are used to sustain this plane. Well allow me to introduce you to the last Major role the Operations... well operate. Power generation." The Prime Engineer led the Goblin through several large rooms filled with tech, gauges, sensors, holographic displays, and innumerable personnel. Until the young woman was led to an area that seemed extremely out of place. An opulent, richly decorated and all together extremely welcoming atrium. The Engineer nodded to the front desk works before opening the doorway leading into a room dimly lit.   Incredibly comfortable looking, filled with what could only be described as the inside of a well loved home. On a plush bed, surrounded by a series of cables attached an indescribable array of runes and machines, lay a presumably sleeping Faerie. Hooked up to IV bags, an oxygen mask, and several other hook ups. "I don't understand."   "I don't expect you to. The Divine Spark born in us all is something immensely powerful, for many it is something seldom able to access, given enough time they will eventually be able to use it to it's full force, but... the energy it holds... They are volunteers, we do not force anyone to undergo this, and the second they wish to stop, the process is stopped. Though, this doesn't go on for more than a week at a time without a different person being brought in to undergo the process. We call all the Volunteers, Honors.''   "So what is happening here?"   "Their Divine Spark is having a small portion of it's power siphoned away to power the Citadel. Mind you that all Sparks regenerate, so with that in mind, we built this machine to harness that ability. Though we never take enough to make the Honor feel any effect. I suppose you could call this Soul Magic, if you will, I lack a better term. No Honor is allowed to Volunteer again for another decade, we have found that this is more than enough time to recover and grow ten fold by the time they would be asked to do this again. They are kept in a chemically induced coma, there really isn't much for entertainment while this process takes place. Beyond that, distraction and the wandering of the mind change the properties of the power we harvest."
