Veldheer

Roughly translated as "warchief", the veldheer leads the Ardent Corporation in times of strife.

Appointment

The swampfolk respect strenght. Thus, the only one fit to lead them is the strongest person around. The title of veldheer must be taken and maintained by any means, either by personal skill in combat or a personality that gets skilled combatants to fight for it.

Duties

The veldheer is not supposed to directly tell their people what to do, but rather to oversee the solving of disputes, provide leadership in combat and speak for them to the other factions.

History

In ancient times, when the Ardent were nothing more than a coalition of villages and raider bands, each clan would have its own veldheer, and send them to the Sword of the Regent Tower (back then just known as "the tower") to hold council and discuss matters relevant to all. Then, during Stender occupation, the council was revoked and the clans herded into Clay so they would be easier to watch over. After the Freykorp Incident, with the clans more united than ever before, a single veldheer would lead the corporation.

Cultural Significance

The veldheer symbolizes the sovereignity of the Ardent and their autonomy from outside influence. It is living proof that they can govern themselves.
