Spinning the Threads

Thu, Jun 5th 2025 01:50
It begins with the gathering—raw wool pulled from thornbushes and wind-scattered drifts, still full of burrs, of earth, of the scent of storm and field. The fibers must be picked through with quiet patience. Every snag and stain, every shadow of what the wool once carried, must be sorted by touch and instinct. What can be made clean is kept. What cannot is burned.
Carding follows. Wire teeth are drawn across one another in rhythmic motion. The wool is combed until the fibers align as roving—long and loose, prepared to be shaped.
A spindle is set into motion by a flick of the wrist. The first threads are drawn out, fed from the roving to the spindle’s motion. With each turn, the fibers stretch—pulled through tension and memory. Each inch carries something with it: a scent remembered, a wound traced, a truth once buried.
When spun too tightly, the thread coils and snarls. When spun too loose, it drifts apart. But when balanced, it holds. And in the holding, a story begins to take form. The thread is wound on. And in the winding, it becomes history.
