NASA
History
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the United States of America was the biggest contributor to early interstellar exploration, and they were the ones who eventually figured out how to use a jump drive (though the Chinese Manned Space Agency figured out how to use it for FTL travel, specifically). They were behind setting up the first extrasolar colonies, and the settlement of Concord all happened thanks to the organization, too. That is, until the megacorporations of the world decided to start declaring parts of space as their own territory.
Disbandment
The truth was that NASA was losing control. Though it was a national organization, many large companies all over the world were buying out officially owned parts of space and even entire worlds. Major world governments that had owned these places eventually succumbed to their offers and gave up the territory for them. At that point, they might as well have controlled the space race. NASA lost most of its original funding, seeing as the places they could use for their own research and exploration were very limited. All such missions had to go through the owning company first, meaning they had no power there.
On April 18th, 2003, NASA gave up all extrasolar territory and pretty much completely disolved. It still remained, but it didn't have nearly any of the power it used to. The major corporations at the time grew and moved on to other systems they could control, leaving behind the old near-Sol territories and becoming the first true ICGs. When the United Allied Systems were first established, NASA became one of the first organizations to lead it, with the space agencies of countries like China, India, Russia, Canada, and Saudi Arabia following them. Though they did make a return, they don't have any of the power they did before. Many spacers wear patches with the logo of NASA or another space agency. This is essentially in protest against the whole concept of ICGs and the idea that anyone rich or influential enough can claim territory in outer space.
