Val Goran

The Val Goran culture is by far the largest group of Dwarves on Telgren. With their roots in migrants to the ancient elven Empire of Oleandron, the Val Goran have inhabited mountains on Telgren from the first century SC. The dwarves that would become the Val Goran originally inhabited the western hills of Ærellion, but were defeated by humans sometime before the calamity. Having lived under human dominance for several hundred years, the dwarves made contact with the fledgling Empire of Oleandron and agreed to cross the sea to live on Telgren. While there are still sparse settlements of dwarves which stayed behind, the vast majority decided to make the journey to Oleandron, where they expected far more autonomy. The agreement was mutually beneficial, as the elves hoped that the dwarves would establish profitable mines which could then be taxed, and that they would eradicate the trollish menace which had been raiding them from the Impir Mountains.
Unlike the crowded region from whence they came, the dwarves found a series of sparsely populated mountain ranges in which they could call home as the Empire's borders expanded. With the exception of trolls, the Val Goran found little to no enemies to fight, and so they settled down to build their people new homes. Due to the lack of dwarves in the army, and the lack of regional threats, the dwarven people were able to increase their population a sizable amount, which contributed to their spread across the Empire even in its later, more unstable form. Often, the provinces of the Val Goran were some of the most stable and prosperous in the entire empire, only matched by a few metropolises. The Val Goran received many benefits from the Empire, and as it disintegrated most lost contact with their other scattered settlements, retreating inwards. This gave rise to several divergent cultures, though all remain Val Goran.
Impiriun culture represents the various dwarves which populate the Blazennia region, primarily in the Impir Mountains. The Impiriun, unlike most other dwarves, are rather integrated into human society and some have adopted Blazeology, though most retain their traditional pantheon of gods. Overall, they have no issue living among humans as long as their autonomy and unique skills are recognized- something that has become a sticking point under Emperor Csömbor I.
Marthun culture applies only to the dwarves of Kharakhamount. The Marthun Dwarves declared themselves independent from Oleandron well before the collapse of the empire, and refuse to allow outsiders into their nation. Their culture is extremely conservative, militaristic, and religious, and their leaders insist that the dwarven people have been led astray. According to most other dwarves, the Marthun worship the dwarven gods, but they do it in such a way that is no longer consistent with the rest of dwarvenkind, even going so far as to emphasize and deemphasize different parts of the dwarven gods. The Marthun consider all other races to be dangerous, though they despise trolls, goblins, and orcs most of all. Since independence, they have been aiming to secure control over the entirety of the Urzomarth mountains, seeing it as their rightful land.
Dzendrum culture is prominent along the western coasts of Alcedina, primarily living in Bhur Drizl, though most of the coastal cities have at least some Dzendrum population. The Dzendrum are multicultural and are the more accepting of other races living amongst them than other Val Goran, being especially friendly with halflings. The Dzendrum also have managed to become somewhat able seafarers, which has expanded their trading reach.
Groz Dendris culture is a minor culture present in the highlands of Urzomarthia and Dennonia. Mostly composed of dwarves living outside the mountains when Oleandron collapsed, they once controlled large swaths of land simply due to a lack of competing populations. However, the constant warfare of the Erleting has chipped their lands down to nothing, and although the Groz Dendris still exist they are not in possession of any sovereign states at the moment, something that seems unlikely to change.
