Thlai
The Thlai are a much-maligned people who inhabit the Jangalavaal and Juyantur, who once ruled a variety of geographically distinct states. However, these kingdoms would eventually fall to the Equatorial Trolls, pushed south in greater numbers by the Solar Elves. There, they would fall under the control of other nations, be it dark elven, anemoi, gnomish, or human.
Those who were conquered by the Dark Elves have become known as the Peliang, and have became second-class citizens in the strictly hierarchal dark-elven states. The Peliang are generally downtrodden, slaves or servants, with their free population generally living in slums or in rural farms on the outskirts. Although they have nominal rights under many of the Dark Elven states, these rights are often ignored or trampled over by monarchs and local lords enforcing a hardline attitude, and equally they may be expanded on with a tolerant ruler. However, any dissent is punished harshly, with rebels being executed and their families often broken up. The Peliang culture is heavily influenced by the Dark Elves because of Dark Elven assimilationist tactics as well as linguistic influence. However, they have managed to preserve their language despite centuries of oppressions, with Dark Elves caring little for educating them in their language.
Those Thlai who escaped to the southeast of Juyantur are known as the Tlan. Although their geographical distribution is rather small, confined to the Greater Juyantur peninsula, they have maintained a population of almost 100,000. Most Tlan live under Anemoi stewardship vassal or under the semi-autonomous tribes that are under Anemoi protection, though some have migrated closer to the coastline, where they fall under control of the Insayluru. The Tlan are split between sedentary farmers and a more nomadic population which moves between the various Insayluru states and Anemoi zone throughout the year, trading between the groups as they do so.
The final group of Thlai are these who became seafarers, generally settling on the Richtbaai islands, but also dwelling on a few smaller atolls along the coast. They are known as the Teslochun, and as of the modern day they are tightly integrated with the Gnomes of the region. The Teslochun are known for being a friendly and open people, long since converted to the Gnomish religion, but retaining other cultural values. For example, the Teslochun men and women enjoy a fairly equal standing, which is part of why the Teslochun and Gnomes were able to work together so well. Before the Gnomish arrival the Teslochun primarily practiced agriculture or fishing, both of which have continued under Gnomish rule. However, they have diversified into trade and commerce, especially as guards for the Gnomish shipping. In the modern era, some Teslochun have migrated back to the mainland, where they live in Angchrapur and serve as one of the many ethnicities that make up that city's population.
