Taulyan
The Taulyan are an ethnic group of Hobgoblins living in the northern highlands of Ærellion. Mainly nomadic or at least seminomadic, their lands are usually sparsely settled. Their culture is shaped by their harsh environment and tribal conflicts, but also by their isolation from the larger world. The Taulyans generally stand in opposition to the Algyaldans and the majority of them also reject the religion of Izobhüdiye.
The Taulyan lands are a cold and not very fertile region, sitting between the magical forest and the northeastern coastline. Divided by the northeastern mountains, with roughly half of their population living on each side of the peaks, they nonetheless have similar concerns. Those who live to the south of the mountains dwell in a region of great elevation and well as little vegetation. The land is a mix between montane grasslands, grassland steppe, and rocky and baren highland regions, all of which are interspersed by small streams which are primarily fed by snowmelt. Since the region is rather cold and dry, as well as being on the leeward side of the mountains, there is little rain during the summer months, with precipitation generally being in the form of snow on peaks. With little rainfall, sources of water are sparse and precious, and conservation of water is a priority. One feature also of note to the southern Taulyans is the magical forest, as the region immediately bordering them is overrun by Feykin. Although these Feykin generally don't venture out into the highlands and steppe due to the environment not being ideal, they are an occasional worry for the tribes which live close to the wood's edge. The northern population's lands are typically of lower elevation, but being on the windward side of the mountains means that fronts of cold air are often blown down from the north, so they must endure similarly cold temperatures. However, the lands to the north are generally wetter and support more developed forests, with the terrain going from mountains, highlands and montane grasslands just north of the peaks before transitioning to forest steppe and eventually true forests closer to the coastline. Most of these forests are populated by goblins, while the Taulyan hobgoblins stick to the steppe and highlands.
The Taulyans have pretty much always been isolated. The Feykin have long dominate the section of the magical forest which borders them, eliminating trade to the south as a possibility. Their inland status means they don't have the ability to truly export along sea routes, as they lack martime tradition, whihc the coastal goblins have little interest in such a trade. Even if they did atempt large scale trade, the region has poor prospects. Most oceanic trade routes to the north stop off in the Magnifor Bay before turining back to the south, so the Taulyans would be forced to take the initiative. Besides, the High Elven isolationism means that trade in that region is extremely sparse to begin with. Any such trade with Mortvügg would face similar issues, with the Orcs of the closest shores having similar products as the the Taulyans anyways. Thus, trade has always flown south and inland. The hostility of the Algyaldan to the continued sovereignty of the Taulyan has stymied this trade over the years, though some small scale initiatives still take place between border peoples, especially the lowand Taulyan, which make up some of the population in the east of Algyaldan, where they are mixed with assimilated populations. These peoples still maintain their migratory ways, though the incresing reach of the Algyaldan government may eventually end this.
