Myconigi

The Myconigi are a curious race of mushroom-like people which live in small communities throughout northwestern Yehv, primarily in the boreal forests but also being found underground or in the swamps occasionally. Their head is topped off with a mushroom cap of quite large surface area, which they can control using internal muscles to fit through smaller spaces. They have long, pale faces which run directly into their neck without a chin. A short race, they typically stand just a few feet tall, although they have been known to reach 5 feet in a few cases. They generally have wide, light feet contrasted by thin fingers. As for their body, they have no typical shape, and they may be quite thin or very round depending on the region. Their anatomy has several unique benefits. Their capped heads allow them to absord moisture from the air, as well as when it rains, ensuring that they don't need to search for clean water (a serious advantage in swamps, especially). Since unlike mushrooms they do have noticable body heat, snow which lands of their cap will also melt to provide water. When a Myconigi ingests too much water, they start to excrete it through their skin, but this doesn't bother them. Their wide feet, which are mostly used for walking over fens, swamps, or snow without falling through the surface are a major part of this evaporation process, allowing them to vent excess water without it dripping all over. Myconigi do not have eyes, rather they 'see' via a combination of techniques, including micro-spores which can sense movement around them. Of course, this method doesn't work in high winds. They do have light-sensitive spots in a ring around their head which function as proto-eyes, their secondary form of vision.
The Myconigi have a somewhat unique culture based around their small communities, which generally function autonomously. Usually, each community is in the center of a region in which the Myconigi hunt and gather within. This area can be quite small due to both their small stature and their strong stomachs, which allow them to eat anything, even decomposing things. To the Myconigi, consumption of the dead is the highest honor, and those that are not eaten or decomposed after their death cannot have their spirits return to the realm. Their consumption is faster than the natural process of decomposition, so they see it as expediting the process. Correspondingly, criminals or enemies are often burned after their death, to ensure their spirit is not returned to the realm. The Myconigi prefer building using natural materials such as wood or bone as opposed to using metals and stones, since they view those materials as weapons and not homely. This allows the wood and bone to eventually decompose and enrich the soil over time.
The myconigi have a varied diet due to their scavenging, but a few crops are alos cultivated. They are experts in mushroom-farming due to their innate understanding of their growing conditions, and myconigi mushrooms are of the highest quality and their mains trade/export. They also enjoy berries, which they cultivate in the wild as opposed to planting them where they wish. Stews and soups are very common, though they are somewhat questionable and should not be eaten by outsiders. This is because the Myconigi often use rotting ingredients or even blood as a base. They abhor cooked meat (since therefore its spirit cannot return) and therefore only eat things raw. Outsiders often find such things disgusting, which influences the Myconigi desire to stay separate.
