Farathin

The Arcanist's Aspect

Farathin, the Land of Fog and Rain, is home to most sorcerers, wizards and other arcanists of Syoll. It has no roads or paths other than the Lake Road. Without magic—or a guide— adventurers and travellers often find themselves lost in the misty grey of Farathin, and very few ever make it back again. The aspect is the centre of arcane knowledge and the study of such matters, with various educational institutions spread out across the vast landscape.
Farathin was once an incredibly beautiful place, its landscape covered in snow almost all year round, with rushing fjords and remarkable volcanoes. At the beginning of the War of Frost, however, the Syolladver deities Rogna and Sognir combined their powers to make a protective barrier against the invaders by cursing Farathin to be covered entirely by a magical fog.

Political Structure

Farathin, similarly to the Winterlands, does not have any settlements outside of its hold capitals. However, unlike the Winterlands, the landscape is still divided and managed by their respective holds, since these borders determine territory that can be used for research by organisations of separate holds. These holds are the following: the Beacon Hold at the southern coast, the Fields of Arcana in the north-east, and Kroxavik in the west. Triad Representatives will reside exclusively in their hold capital and be focused solely on the city regarding policies.

People and Culture

The Farathinian population almost exclusively resides in its three cities, with only very few exceptions. While there are many people born and raised in the cities, there are also a lot of temporary residents such as students or researchers. This means there is a lot of cultural contact with other regions, albeit indirect contact through people coming to Farathin for academic purposes. Additionally, there is constant exchange between the three cities, connecting them more tightly and creating more of a community feeling between the people.
Farathinian values are often rooted in a will to discover the unknown, and any methods to reach such ends are regarded as necessary. Studiousness and devotion are seen as great virtues, and traditions and passed-down knowledge are held in high regard. Where Amrans are sometimes seen as arrogant, Farathinians are generally seen as wise and intuitive, though perhaps a bit distant from the rest of the world.

Travel

The thick fog and magic-tinged air makes travelling Farathin by land incredibly dangerous. Many journeys are conducted by ship along the coast or the rivers, but even this can be perilous. Travel by airship is safer and more common, though it only works between Ylenin and Solasheim, since Kroxavik is underground and not easily accessible by airship. By far the most common mode of travel is by the uniquely elaborate teleportation system. While usually the amount of energy required to maintain a portal for longer than a minute is too high, Farathin's magical atmosphere makes it possible to have perpetually open portals through which people can travel or materials can be shipped to other cities. While there have been attempts to set up a similar system with other cities outside of Farathin, the lack of arcane atmosphere on one end has led the attempts to fail.

Resources and Contribution

While there is near to no agricultural production, Farathin does have a small amount of stone and metals that are contributed to other aspects. However, the most significant exports of the aspect are magical products of all sorts. This includes—but is not limited to—spell scrolls, magical items, books, and potions as well as educated and highly capable enchanters, sorcerers and other specialised magic-wielders. Since these are unique contributions, they are of great value to Syoll and easily compensate the lack of food and other necessaries. Nevertheless, there have been recent efforts to build magically maintained greenhouses and the likes to ba able to rely less on other aspects for food.

"I recently heard that Farathin has the lowest death rates of any aspect. I was not surprised, since a person there is only counted as dead if they remain so for three consecutive days. I would argue that instead of this being about deaths, Farathin actually has the highest necromancy rates. It's all a matter of perspective."
