Farathin

Farathin, the Land of Fog and Rain, is home to most sorcerers, wizards and other arcanists of Syoll. It has no roads or paths other than the Lake Road, the road that connects the seven Aspects of the mainland. Without magic—or a guide—, adventurers and travellers often find themselves lost in the misty grey of Farathin and their only hope would be to find a small settlement or a wizard's castle. Then again, there is no telling if those who dwell there will help or hinder the traveller.   Farathin houses many different types of schools and groups all across its territory, some of these being connected by portals and teleportation circles. Each one of these factions and schools have specialisations, and have vast collections of books, scrolls and other texts on those subjects. The largest collection of knowledge, however, can be found in the Arcane University in Solasheim, Farathin's capital.

History

Farathin was once an incredibly beautiful place, its landscape covered in snow almost all year round, with rushing fjords and remarkable volcanoes. At the beginning of the War of Frost, however, the gods Rogna and Sognir combined their powers to make a protective barrier against the invaders by cursing Farathin to be covered entirely by a magical fog.

Demography and Population

The Farathinian population is heavily concentrated in relatively large settlements, with only a few places in between housing people. The average age is also comparatively low, due to the many universities that are found in the cities, and they have the lowest death rate of all the aspects. This might however be connected to the fact that a "death" is only counted as such if the individual remains dead for three consecutive days, and necromancy is not really a frowned upon practice in Farathin, and even quite spread.

Agriculture & Industry

Farathin is not able to produce anything agriculturally, and its only functional industry is magical produce of all sorts. This includes—but is not limited to—spell scrolls, magical items, books, and potions. While this may not seem like enough to be traded for all the required food and raw materials, it is produced in such numbers and versatile styles that it compensates well enough for all the imported items.

Trade & Transport

Trade in Farathin works with ships (which dock in Solasheim or Kroxavik), airships, and another, unique system, namely portals. While usually, the amount of energy required to maintain a portal for longer than a minute is too high, Farathin's magical atmosphere makes it possible to have perpetually open portals through which materials can be shipped to other Farathinian settlements.

Education

Interestingly, although higher education is highly regarded in Farathin, the fundamental school system is not as well-renowned. This leads to an interesting dynamic in Farathinian academia, where students from other aspects, especially Colliennach, are preferred to Farathinians and sometimes even get an unfair advantage. However, Farathin has one of the highest literacy rates in all the aspects, as the very concentrated population means that no individuals are too far away from a school.
