Northern Plain Cakes
Northern Plain Cakes are a staple food of the nomadic tribes that live on the Punished Plains of north west Myruthea on Magicians' End and they are one of the very few trade items which are exchanged with their more "civilized" neighbours, making them a popular item also in the towns and cities of Deld, Halsatt, Salt, Silvermouth, Genith, Arginbury, Galebridge, Klaractazum, Highspan and Peld.
Northern Plain Cakes may be eaten on their own, as they often are on the Punished Plains, or in richer places as a popular savoury accompaniment to almost any meal, such as this Galebridge breakfast.
Because they have a neutral flavour, neither sweet nor salty but crunchy and slightly nutty, the cakes can also be used in desserts, such as this apple and raisin honey drizzled confection, popular in Arginbury and Klaractazum.

Manufacturing process
The Plain Cakes are made with a mixture of ground flour and whole grains, the proportion of the different types lending a slightly different flavour to each batch. They are fried over an open fire and seared to provide some structural integrity, nevertheless a traditional fresh Plain Cake (the best kind) crumbles easily, so to store them for transport and preserve them over the winter they are often coated in a binding agent, which might be a sticky honey, red dock leaf juice or garmal fat. They will then be refried or baked before eating.

Plain Cakes are common in autumn in the Punished Plains of Myruthea and surrounding districts. They are eaten throughout the winter and into the following spring but by summer any surviving cakes will generally be inedible or will have crumbled away to nothing, so that those who hunger for them must wait until the grain ripens on the grass again.
We can't eat this! It's as dry as a northern plain cake in summer and has about as much goodness in it. You might as well have sent us dust. And no, I won't drink that nasty white "remedy" you're selling. Not today. Not any day!
Raw materials & Components
Northern Plain Cakes are made with the mixed grain of a number of species of hardy yellow grasses that can survive the arid conditions of the Punished Plains. These grasses are not cultivated but they are very widespread and tend to come into seed around the same time, so that the sparse populations of herders and hunter gatherers that wander the flat landscapes of this desolate region, can gather them in quantity when they are in season.
