Swarm Nanite Defence Formation

What is the Swarm Nanite Defence Formation?

The Swarm Nanite Defence Formation is a sub-branch system and off-branch technology of the 3D Printer Nanite System. This swarm of nanites is used to protect both the 3D Printer Nanite System while it works, and to protect Test City Five from any intruders or damage like fire.   This formation, as mentioned, uses the same technology as the 3D Printer Nanite System, though its form and focus differ. Instead of being designed and programmed to build and repair, they have been designed and programmed to protect, defend, and potentially destroy any threat that puts the 3D Printer Nanite System or Test City Five in danger.   The swarm, when viewed under a microscope, almost resemble hornets, their bodies are long and lithe and at the end of their bodies is a long and thin hypodermic needle. These needles are the swarm’s primary offensive ability; each stinger is designed in a way to inject or spray one of several chemicals.   There are numerous chemicals and compounds that the nanite swarm is programmed to synthesize and use. A paralytic that, when injected into a biological target, attacks their nervous system and renders them immobile. A toxin, which works much the same as the paralytic but also acts as a necrotic force that will likely render the victim deceased. A highly concentrated ion-charged saltwater that can harm and/or immobilize mechanical intruders. And lastly, a foaming substance that acts as a fire retardant in case of fire.

While the nanites primarily stay within their standard hornet-like forms, they are able to slightly modify their bodies at a moment's notice in order to deal with any situation at hand. For example, if a fire were to break out that puts the 3D Printer Nanite System, or Test City Five, in danger, the Swarm Nanite Defence Formation would recalibrate their stingers into a cone-shaped sprayer, which could more easily help distribute a fire retardant onto the fire.   The Swarm Nanite Defence Formation forms a thin, almost imperceptible layer over the domed portion of Test City Five. Like an enormous sheet that coats even the doorways which lead into Test City Five from its inner workings and docking stations.   Though the swarm is large, it is not large enough to be everywhere within Test City Five at once. Instead, if the layer is breached at any moment, the swarm will quickly collect en masse, size depending on the threat level calculated upon breach, and deal with the situation on hand. Whether this is dealing with an intruder or handling an emergency on-site, like a fire.   When dealing with intruders, the nanites have two modes: Halt and Destroy. Halt instructs the nanites to stun and incapacitate the intruder, and Destroy is more self-explanatory. Which mode is triggered depends on the threat level calculated upon intrusion. If a single small target is trespassing, Halt will likely be the mode selected, as the Hivemind Sentius Network will more than likely wish to interrogate the intruder. If a large group or a large target is trespassing, Destroy may be the more likely mode. As the removal of a large threat and the protection of Hivemind assets is far more important than any interrogation.
Summary
The Swarm Nanite Defence Formation is a formation of AI-driven nanites that act as a defence mechanism for the Hivemind Sentius, specifically protecting its construction nanites, the 3D Printer Nanite System, from external threats. It forms a thin, almost imperceptible layer over the domed portion of Test City Five, encompassing the doorways leading into it. The swarm will attack anything that breaches this layer, either incapacitating it or killing it, depending on the calculated risk factor.
Weaknesses
Much like with the 3D Printer Nanite System, the Swarm Nanite Defence Formation cannot function under extreme cold temperatures, such as in the void of space or extreme cold. Ironically, though they are effective deployers of fire retardant, if they were to be sprayed with a high-pressure fire hose, it could temporarily reduce their effectiveness. Though it would likely not fully disable them.   This nanite system has a secondary physical weakness; unlike their companion system, the Swam Nanite Defence Formation cannot self-repair. This is due to restrictions on size and memory capacity. Because they are so small, these nanintes can only have one primary function to focus on. So, because they focus on defence and are capable of synthesizing chemicals and shifting their forms, they do not have the physical or computational bandwidth to also be able to repair themselves if damaged.   Lastly, there is one final weakness that could help bypass the Swarm Nanite Defence Formation. This potential weakness relates to how it identifies and approaches targets. For example, if a large enough target is identified as trespassing, the swarm may deploy a large number of nanites to the area. Thinning its outer detection layer and potentially leaving a hole large enough for a small number of people to sneak through without being detected by the nanites. Though the window would likely only encompass mere moments as the nanites readjust and fill in gaps.
