Lantern Hill

Named for the beacon on its hilltop, Lantern Hill has long served as a waypoint. The town was built at the confluence of roads leading to Highport, and is itself a bustling hub of trade with much to offer a weary traveller.

Defences

The eponymous beacon on the hilltop also affords a grand view of the surrounding landscape, which allows the town's militia plenty of time to prepare for incoming threats. In addition, the inner town is protected by a wall of thick timbers with watch-towers at each corner.  Beyond this, the outer regions of the town rely on a much newer and less-sturdy palisade.

Infrastructure

Lantern Hill is where the lesser byways of the countryside converge with the main road that connects Highport to the inner provinces. The town was originally settled around a smooth hill, and this still comprises the inner city. The so-called "outer town" is newer, and mostly residential, but still has many market squares, inns, and amenities for visitors.

Districts

The old town was built on and around the hill, and this inner town is where a contemporary visitor will find local guild houses, the mayor's house, town hall, and other important civic structures. The inner town is divided from the outer by a thick wooden wall, which was originally the perimeter of the entire settlement. Since that time, though, the town has continued to grow, and now several houses and market squares sprawl beyond the original walls and into the gullies and fields beyond.
