Sagenut

Sagenut is a common bush nut found throughout the 11 realms. It is particularly useful as a food supply as they are perennial bushes that have varieties suited to a wide variety of climates. They only grow to 3-4 feet in height for most varieties, though some varieties are know to be only two feet tall and other varieties are more narrow and grow to five feet tall. The shorter varieties work better in higher elevations and coler climates, while the taller work better in moist environments where they are competing with many other plants for light.

Basic Information

Ecology and Habitats

Sagenut is usually planted with Whiteweed. This is due to the fact that whiteweed will repel certain boreworms that can affect sagenut bushes, as well as attract benificial polinators. The whiteweed has shallow roots that can feed off some of the nitrogen fixing bacteria that sagenut bushes attract, and whiteweed will acidify the soil making nutrients more avaliable for the sagenut bushes. Whiteweed flowers themselves are edible making them a good pairing for gardens. The harvest seasons for the pairing become, Spring Beatings for tender branches to soak, summer for the whiteweed flowers, and fall for the nuts themselves.
It takes several years for the sagenut bushes to produce a large quantity of nuts, making it a high priority for new gardens to plant them early.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Several parts of the plant are used.
Firstly the nuts themselves are ground for a paste, which is at times dried for a meally flour.
The thin branches release an insect repellant when boiled. This is commonly sprinkled around homes to prevent ants or similar pests from affecting food stores. It can also be concentrated and placed on the skin or clothing as a repellant for mosquitos and gnats. It will however attract bees and wasps. Likely due to the relationship Sagenut bushes have with Whiteweed.
The nut shells themselves are de-haired, ground and used as a weak form of pepper. This is very common

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Generally found all over the 11 realms, in gardens as well as some that have gone wild near rivers or lakes.
