Dragons
Dragons are a mysterious species with unexplained biology. While they have traits of birds, lizards and humanoids they are not really any of those things. They also are also too large to properly exist in most cases. Their size and diet do not generally match as they don't eat enough for their size.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Their size suggests they have a way of gaining nourishment from unusual or magical sources given their diet. While they do ingest a large amount of calories it should not be enough for their overall size. Their ability to fly as large as they get is also unusual.
Scale color is mythologically tied to their abilities, but the reality is that their color relates no real information about their abilities or temperament.
Adult dragon's bodies seem to alter the world around them, so when multiple dragons get together storms often arise. Ancient Dragons often leave permanent effects in the world where they lair. Some of these locations are used by churches or other organizations as sources of power.
It is beleived they are the first to have develeopd magical sleep. Both elves and dragons now utalize a special form of deep meditative sleep beleived to strengthen them and extend their lives. The Dragon Dream is what is called for Dragons, while the elfsleep is the name for elves.

Genetics and Reproduction
They reproduce slowly and are highly independent. This means that social behavior and pressure can affect their reproductive rate significantly.
Growth Rate & Stages
Eggs are laid by a mother dragon and vary in size from a basketball to a beachball. They are soft shelled typically, though some variants are harder shelled.
Child Dragons are the size of a large dog or a pony. They slowly grow to a young age dragon by the age of 25. These young dragons are the size of large horses. Adult dragons grow to ten feet tall while standing on four legs, and are considered adults till about 200 years old. Once over 200 years their growth goes in spurts that vary by individual dragon.
The change from Young to full Adulthood seems to involve a deep sleep inside some form of chrysalis. This is a vulnerable time for a dragon, and it will prepare defenses and a good hiding place for the duration of the transformation. Scholars argue how long it takes, though most agree probably a year at the least.
Old dragons are considered those over 400 years old, while ancient dragons are over 600 years old. Some elder wyrms are said to be a thousand years old.
