Frigid Woe

Frigid Woe is a disease created during the human-elven war by elven mages in the mountain fortifications of Coedwig Eira. Currently, it has spread to Palebank Village.

Transmission & Vectors

Transmission occurs through the air when a creature breathes in the blue Frigid Woe spores, found in vials in the mountain fortifications of Coedwig Eira. It appears that the disease is only transmitted via air when the vials are close to a potential creature. Contact and body fluids don't spread the disease. When a creature comes into contact with these spores, it must succeed on a DC 11 CON saving throw or be infected.

Causes

The cycle begins when a creature inhales the Frigid Woe spores.

Symptoms

It takes 1d4 days for symptoms to appear in an infected creature. These symptoms include fatigue, chills, and visible blue veins that appear on the creature’s body. The infected creature’s speed is reduced by 5 feet as long as it remains infected. Every day after symptoms appear, an infected creature must succeed on a DC 11 Constitution saving throw, or its speed is reduced by another 5 feet. If a creature’s speed is reduced to 0 as a result of this disease, the creature dies and its body turns into a statue made of ice.

Treatment

Magic or traditional medicine do not cure the disease. Only the antidote from the fortifications can do so.

Prognosis

It takes 1d4 days for symptoms to appear in an infected creature. These symptoms include fatigue, chills, and visible blue veins that appear on the creature’s body. The infected creature’s speed is reduced by 5 feet as long as it remains infected. Every day after symptoms appear, an infected creature must succeed on a DC 11 Constitution saving throw, or its speed is reduced by another 5 feet. If a creature’s speed is reduced to 0 as a result of this disease, the creature dies and its body turns into a statue made of ice.   No such stages except a noticeable reduction in speed and more blue veins.

Sequela

No such sequelae.

Affected Groups

Everyone is a potential target. Although its purpose was to be used against humans, it has an equal chance of affecting all races.

Hosts & Carriers

Only humans and nonhumans can host the disease.

Prevention

A vaccine can be made based on the antidote.

Epidemiology

The disease is not transmissible; the only way for it to spread is for people to inhale the spores from the vials.

History

The first recorded case is in Palebank Village, which triggers the adventures.   However, the disease was created as a weapon by elven scientists during the human-elven war.

Cultural Reception

People have no idea what this disease is. They're scared of it and are staying away from the infected and their homes. The people isolate them but try to do what they can to ease their pain.
