Coedwig Eira
Coedwig Eira is a snowy forest (the title is literally Welsh for that, to give it the Elder Speech effect) located in the East of the Continent in Kaedwen.
There are some settlements near the western edge of the forest and people do wander in, but they tend to leave the forest alone because of the biting cold and its monsters.
Geography
It's a mountainous/hilly tundra forest spanning the Hertch mountains of Kaedwen.
A few small streams run through the tundra. There are also a few lakes (that may freeze in the winter). There is a large river that flows out of the forest. Palebank Village exists right where the river exits.
Coedwig Eira is based on IRL Black Forest in Germany except it has year-round snow.
Ecosystem
The abiotic environment is composed of the river, lakes and streams. There's year-round snow in the forest. There are some rock formations and caves where the mountains' incline is steep enough. It rains throughout the year.
The flora here is tundra-based. Mostly conifers. A few Archespores adapted to the tundra do exist in the area. That'd make for interesting combat.
The fauna consists of deer, bears, snow leopards, horses etc. In terms of monsters, there could be Drowners in the lake, Nekkers in the caves or Harpies in the trees and mountains. Maybe a few wraiths to show that people have died exploring these woods.
Ecosystem Cycles
Spring: Sun begins to shine through occasionally. Daylight hours increase. Snowfall stops. Areas of ground are unfrozen.
Summer: The time of least cloud cover, allowing a fair amount of sunlight to reach the areas not covered by the trees.
Autumn: Daylight hours decrease. Sunlight intensity falls. Pockets of ground and small bodies of water begin freezing.
Winter: Daylight is filtered by cloud cover at all times. Snowfall begins. The ground freezes over. All but the largest lakes and the main tributary river are frozen.
Localized Phenomena
Year-round snow (a little unnatural).
Frozen waterfalls.
Fauna & Flora
Already detailed some of the stuff above.
Natural Resources
- Fish
- Ice
- Timber
- Ores
- Ancient elven artifacts
History
The forest is home to ancient elven fortifications, set up during the time of the human-elven war. The fortifications deep in the mountains included a scientific research laboratory, where mages experimented with magical diseases and conditions to stall the human advance. They created Frigid Woe but were unable to control it properly, unleashing the disease in the fortification and potentially causing the forest's year-round snow.
Tourism
People don't venture too deep into the forest. However, they do tend to enjoy the streams, waterfalls and relatively safe natural beauty in the outer forest close to Palebank Village.
