The Whisper, The Universe Between Worlds
"Children learn in school that the Great Rebellion concluded with the closing of the doors to our world. Isolating us from the rest of the cosmos and making us the Free Peoples of Aeridos. People don't really think about this part of our history because there's no demons left and at best only a few weak partial Fae. People don't really think about the doors eventual weakening, or that there are... Cracks."
The Whisper is the space between the worlds and realms of the universe. It was the means of travel for the Fae Courts and Demon Hordes that allowed them to subjugate so many planets and people across an unknown span of centuries. It is a place beyond time, as rare individuals are able to enter at one physical point and emerge from another almost instantly. It is a realm where the few recorded glimpses have described it as "distorted space", and where "logic and meaning have been fouled". Elder Ofaris Pen wrote of his Master Dalisay just after his violent suicide:
I do not know why Master Dalisay chose to do this thing alone. If his ego urged him towards becoming a martyr, or the personal greed of owning this discovery alone if only briefly. He was committed to understanding the Whisper, to harnessing its energy, to raising us all beyond our mortal restrictions. Fae and Demon were once like us, he supposed, why should the greater cosmos belong only to them? His study is burned. His notes, everything, is destroyed. They say he stood in the flames watching his life's work disappear, as if he needed to make sure it was obliterated, then threw himself from his window. He was dead before he hit the ground. They figure shortly after I left him he set the fire. All that is left of his theories and practical work are the conversations we had. He was brilliant man, but a fool. I will never forget the look on his face when i walked in his study and saw him sitting in his chair, eyes so red as if he was struggling to shed tears that refused to come. I knew it then he had use d his device. He had seen something. I demanded he tell me what he had seen, and I berated him for doing something so risky before we performed the first live test before the Board. He stared at me, he stared through me, for a long time. Then he said "It's so hungry." No matter much I shouted after that he would not speak again. I gave up and left expecting him to return to his senses after a good night's sleep.
Elder Pen has authored several books on his time with Master Dalisay, and has been a firm proponent of forbidding access to the Whisper. This has drawn criticism from many declaring this:
"My Master did not believe in a perceptible divine presence, and wanted to move us beyond the insignificant on the cosmic scale. Whatever he saw convinced him we are not ready. This was his last lesson for us.”
