Slymill Harbor

The port of Slymill Harbor is home to humans lead by Governor Rosemore, and acts as the major communication hub between the humans and the orcs that lie to the south. It is also the main import/export hub of the southern hub of Triumphant Isle, trading between both Black Hollow to the East, Crukekx Piers to the South, and Breakwater Port to the West, across The Elafin Straight.   The port itself looks ordinary. With its rusted rooftops, stone walls and large cobwebs, Slymill Harbor has a creepy atmosphere.   The main attraction is the Obelisk, which was built 37 years ago and designed by the former commanding War Wizard, Surtor.   Slymill Harbor has an advancing economy, which is mainly supported by engineering, trade and carpentering. But their biggest strengths are refined baking and weaponsmithing.   However, Slymill Harbor lacks people skilled in enchanting.   Despite its strengths and weaknesses, Slymill Harbor is most likely headed towards a gracious future under the leadership of Governor Rosemore. But this remains to be seen.

Demographics

Being a port town, Slymill Harbor has an eclectic mix of population. The majority of the population is split between Human and Elf, much like the rest of the Kingdom of Ashaladon, but there is also a small settlement of Orcs that lies outside the southern gate. There are mixes of races, due to the generations the races have existed side by side. As a main entry to the Triumphant Isle, there is always a good number of the other races that travel through the streets and docks, patronizing the local shops and taverns and markets.

Government

The town of Slymill Harbor is overseen by Governor Rosemon, an elven woman born of a noble house out of Broken Shield. She rules with a stern, but fair approach to law and order.

Defences

The King's Fist has a base of operations here, and they patrol the streets keeping the peace and enforcing the local laws.   The King's Shield serves as the town guard here, manning the battlements and gates.   The city is surrounded by 30' walls of granite, constructed during the time of the War of Incursion.

Infrastructure

The center of Slymill Harbor houses the Obelisk of Surtor, a sandstone monument designed and commissioned by the War Wizard Surtor after holding off the attacking forces of the Orcish Incursion. It stands 40' tall and is engraved all over by runes of enchantment. It serves as the main sight to see and supposedly emanates an aura of protection around the town.   The roads are paved with limestone and mortar, but only for the main thoroughfares, Diety Row and the Highwind District.   The city also has built a sewer system, to manage the waste produced by the local population.

History

Slymill Harbor was founded 300 years ago, when the first settlers came to the shores of Triumphant Isle from the mainland of the Kingdom of Ashaldon. Over time, this small fishing village grew into an influential hub of activity mostly out of the need of a port to transport goods harvested from the surrounding area. 35 years ago, at the end of the conflict with the Orcish Incursion, Slymill Harbor stood as the last battle of the war. Led by Surtor Flyvish, the commanding War Wizard of the 1st Battalion of the King's Fist, the armies held against an assault from the Orcish Incursion for 2 years, until the signing of the Breakwater Treaty, that ended the war.   Since then, the town has continued to grow and prosper, and even now has a small orcish settlement that lies outside the southern walls of the city.

Architecture

The walls that surround the city are 30' high and are built of granite stone.   Many of the houses in the common districts have gardens for growing produce.   The Highwind District is built of high quality lumber, with elaborate designs that show this to be the richest district in the town.   In the Beggar's Row, the buildings are more ramshackled, and built from lower quality woods, with rusted roofs.   Diety Row is a district where the temples to various deities are found, built from Ebongleam, granite, and marble. They tower as the highest points in the city, and are very ostentatious.   Craftsman's Corner is lined with makeshift markets, quality constructed wooden buildings, with azure painted roofs.   Outside the southern gates, lies the small orcish settlement, referred to as Incursion's Foley. It is constructed of hide and wooden tents, lined by dirt roads, and a fighting pit.

Geography

This is a coastal town, surrounded by The Black Cat Wood, a mixed forest of oak and hickory.   The fresh water that the town relies upon is fed by multiple wells dug, tapping into an underground aquifer. It lies at the edge of the Elafin Straight, that seperates the island from the mainland section of the Kingdom of Ashaladon.
