Delvian Crystal
Delvian Crystals are gems that constantly absorb mana from the space around them, making them useful tools for Arcane Casting and Forging.
Properties
Material Characteristics
Delvian Crystals are long with rough ends and can come in many sizes. Most can fit in your hand but they can become as large as a building if they've absorbed enough mana before they were ripped from the ground.
Physical & Chemical Properties
Essence Containing
Delvian Crystals constantly absorb magical essence from the space around them and stores it within itself. Usually, it absorbs essence at a rate that doesn't harm the environment or creatures around it but there have been some instances where magical artifacts starved them and made them hunger for more. This causes the crystals to want direct contact with creatures with mana in them, if they do the crystals will begin to spread on them and petrify them, stealing their mana until they're empty.History & Usage
Everyday use
Delvian Crystals are most commonly used as ye old magical batteries for mages who use Arcane Casting, using the crystals to store mana in their arcane focuses to later power their spell circles. Skilled mages can even force their mana into the crystal to fully recharge it.
Refinement
Devian Crystals can be used right after they're pulled from the ground and require no refinement to be functional.
Hazards
As stated before, if the crystal comes into contact with powerful magic items, they may become starved and petrifiy creatures that touch them, resorting them to be sucked dry of their magical essence causing death. Manually filling crystals with essence can also resort in either A) the crystal takes too much essence from the source and kills it, or B) the crystal over eats and explodes.
Environmental Impact
Delvian Crystals, if incorrectly obtained essence through manual input can cause it to become starved, but in a special way. Instead of the crystals beginning to grow and capture creatures, it takes the essence from an entire area (up to miles) without harming the creatures or environment and effectively becoming an anti-magic field. This effect is difficult to do but is most commonly done on purpose to protect settlements or valuable buildings.
