Trog

"The... the alarms went off! Jackson went to go check the perimeter and... there are pirates! They brought trogs! You gotta get someone out here, they got Jackson and Peter! I think... the other three are engaging them right now but it's not going well! You've gotta get here, trogs don't take prisoners! HQ do you read? HQ! Please ack-no! They're burning through the door! They're coming for me!"

Basic Information

Anatomy

Trogs are bipedal uplifted chimpanzees with strong limbs and coarse black fur.

Biological Traits

Physical Characteristics (compared to their ancestors):   Legs: Longer and more robust, with powerful muscles for walking and running   Chest: More muscular, with a broader and deeper ribcage   Arms: Slightly shorter than regular chimps, but still strong and agile   Hands: Larger and more dexterous, with opposable thumbs   Face: Flatter face, with a more human-like nose and jaw structure   Skin and Hair: Thicker skin, with a reduced amount of body hair

Dietary Needs and Habits

Omnivorous, with a special fondness for insects.

Behaviour

Trogs were developed for military purposes, and they maintain an 'old school' military mentality prioritizing aggression and intimidation over tactics or strategy.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Trogs naturally align into a squad structure, with Primes leading three to four Secunders who divide amongst themselves control of the remaining Tertios. Lone trogs will seek out someone to tell them what to do.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

By design, trogs favor security and military careers. Some settlements have found limited success deploying them as police, though their tendency towards aggression is not really an asset in that field.

Civilization and Culture

History

Trogs' initial uplift was conducted for military purposes in the lead-up to the First Terran Empire's final war to unify Earth. Specifically, they were an answer by the Central African Coalition Forces to make up for their lagging cloning technology (by this time, most other countries had either bolstered their forces with 'Exemplar' model clones or had replaced natural born soldiery entirely). By uplifting Chimpanzees, they could vat-produce more soldiers faster without the instability of rushing through the cloning process for Exemplars. These genetically engineered soldiers were a mixed bag, but they proved resilient against the Gobi forces' viral warfare as their genetic sampling was from a much wider base than the over-engineered Exemplars. When the CACF surrendered, the trog troopers were supposed to be rounded up and destroyed but a majority of them were smart and vicious enough to escape into wild chimp populations, where their uplift proved to breed true. They were a thorn in the First Terran Empire's side through most of their existence, and were recognized by the Great Timocracy as full citizens. Ever since then, they are a minority found in much of human space, with isolated enclaves of Trog-majority settlements peppered around. They favor combative roles but also handle boredom well, which makes them well suited for security and guard duty. They tend to be blunter instruments than humans, which means that command roles are rare.
