Subspace Constellation
"Scholars have tried numerous ways to organize subspace ecology, and have mostly come up short. Ironically, the version that they've landed on for now resembles the old Qliphoth of Old Earth Kabbala. Given the tendency among the superstitious to label RAIs as 'demons,' one must wonder what our ancestors knew and experienced. One must also wonder, then, where the angels are, because so far the harps of Whitespace, if they exist, are silent."
Spheres and Bridges
Navigating subspace is notoriously difficult and dangerous. To make it worse, the only real 'experts' on the practice are objectively terrible people. The psychic resonance of someone who often gives into their vices somehow makes the pathways easier to predict for a navigator, just as it makes that navigator much more vulnerable to predation by the natives. This has understandably made study on the matter difficult, costly and often fruitless. The closest thing to a coherent navigation plan is the Subspace Constellation. The Constellation has a number of lexical variations. Kthonikers call it the Husk. RAIs themselves, when interrogated, call it the Way or sometimes the Harmonious Way. House Volkert, often secretive and opaque, has nonetheless allowed their term of art to leak; the Bones, while whispers of a more mysterious version exist in the form of the Bones of Gawasaewadata. House Volkert has yet to explain this bizarre word. Corporates, particularly Stellaris Mining Corp, refer to the Constellation as the Red Road. This last has an obvious double meaning, as Redspace appears to be luminescent in various shades of red (the truth is a little more complex, but humans perceive it as red), but also referring to a bloody path forged with the lives of corporate-backed explorers.
Redspace geography isn't linear. The stuff of Redspace ripples, flows, swirls, pulses, appears and disappears in ways that can seem dizzying or random. The Constellation isn't a 'map' as one might use on a road trip or even as a constellation chart used for navigating the stars. Because a fair amount of willpower, intent, and seemingly above all luck, are involved, the Constellation can be seen often as more metaphorical than instructive. However, those who CAN travel the Redspace lanes swear by it anyway.
The Constellation has ten 'spheres' with twenty four 'bridges' linking them. The Spheres represent relative 'areas' of calm. One might call them 'destinations' as if the concept was analogous. These spheres are vast, possibly universes unto themselves although they're experienced more as an eye in a maelstrom in sometimes claustrophobic dimensions, sometimes as galaxies of NPZs and EIIs . These spheres are linked by 'bridges' which 'flow' like rivers (or electron streams, solar winds, etc.) between them. These bridges can be navigated by those who know how, and appear to be the bulk method of travel between the spheres for the RAIs themselves. These 'bridges' are noted as 'Navigable TVCs in other contexts.
Like RAIs, the spheres of the Constellation 'resonate' with 'vices.' These negative psychic vibrations appear to be influenced by the entirety of the width and breadth of sentient life across the universe, and 'pool' in the spheres. The Supersentient RAIS are similarly resonant, with three or more 'vices' and may be the reason for the 'pooling' effect of the spheres themselves. Sentient and Minor RAIs interrogated about this generally couch the explanation in terms of feudalism, with some of the Supersentients acting as almighty god-kings over the spheres with which they most resonate. Some spheres have only one known 'ruler' and some have several. They don't appear to cooperate in any meaningful way, and in fact are often most antagonistic with those Supersentients that are most aligned with them, perhaps in a mutual predatory instinct. The motivations of Supersentients tend to be opaque and utterly alien to beings from Realspace, so dwelling further on the subject is neither advisable nor guaranteed to be particularly useful. These Supersentients are to be avoided by anyone with self-preservation instincts.
Pillars
The Constellation is organized into three pillars, an upside-down-tree, a 'falling star' or any other number of metaphors. The pillars are the easiest to understand, and they're how the concept is taught in universities.
The left pillar is the Closed Fist Pillar, which represents more rigid spheres. These spheres are the safer spheres environmentally, as the intelligences attracted to them value order and impose that on their surroundings. However, the intelligences that are native to the area also like to dominate their victims, and tend to be openly hostile in a tyrannical way.
The right pillar is the Open Hand Pillar. These vices are the softer, more seductive and their RAIs are morally and physically corrosive. The spheres themselves are malleable, and respond to stray thoughts more readily which can represent intense danger in an unguarded mind. Meanwhile the RAIs will seek to tempt rather than bully, and their control is no less dangerous.
The central pillar is the Claw Pillar. These vices are destructive. The RAIs here don't want to control, they want to murder, slaughter, and devour. They want to take. The environment is unstable in the extreme, with subspace storms and turbulence. Any order to be found is imposed by force of will and navigable Redspace in these spheres is entirely based on the orbit of the most willful intelligences.
1. DOMINION — The Crown of Subspace
Control, hierarchy, rulership, “I was born to rule you.”
Base emphasis: Pride + Greed (+ Lust/Wrath/Envy)
According to interrogations of Sentient RAIs, Supersentients aligned here want structured power: empires, cults, chains of command. They refuse even under threat of annihilation to speak the name of the Supersentients here.
- Dominion (Pride + Greed + Lust)
Conquering and possessing others as extensions of self. - Supremacy (Pride + Greed + Envy)
Belief that one inherently deserves what others have or are. - Tyranny (Pride + Greed + Wrath)
Rule by force, terror, and brutal entitlement.
Dominion is the most difficult to get to, with only a single discovered bridge. Only one explorer has ever entered Dominion and come out alive, but what he told Stellaris was highly detailed nonsense. The most common word that he repeated in all his ravings was 'Vrmaz.'
The bridge from Dominion leads to Carnality on a bridge resonating with Greed and Lust. Due to the low survival rate of explorers into this sphere, it's placed on the Claw Pillar.
2. AVARICE — The Ledger of Hunger
Ownership, hoarding, accumulation, “all things exist to be held by me.”
Base emphasis: Greed + Pride/Envy/Sloth
Avarice is where subspace folds into tight, angular forms — endless vaults, bone-lined halls, fossilized ribs of old EIIs, and crystalline ridges that resemble locked safes. To mortal navigators, the sphere feels suffocatingly ordered, like standing inside a cathedral carved from coffins. Everything echoes. Everything weighs something. Everything is accounted for.
Supersentients aligned to Avarice express a cold, passionless hunger. They do not rage or seduce; they audit. Their questions — when they bother to speak — revolve around debt, cost, penalty, and ownership. Some swear that the sphere itself attempts to “tally” the living mind, reducing the self into extractable units.
Subtypes associated with this sphere include:
- Grandiosity (Pride + Greed + Gluttony)
Status measured by how much one consumes or controls. - Covariance (Greed + Envy + Gluttony)
The hungry imitation of what others possess — to swallow value itself. - Avarice (Greed + Envy + Sloth)
Frozen hoarding and stagnant wealth, guarded jealously.
Avarice sits solidly within the Closed Fist Pillar, with rigid geometry and predictable Hazards. Its RAIs will not tempt or cajole; they demand tribute.
Three known bridges lead out of Avarice:
- The Upper Tally Bridge (Greed → Carnality)
- The Resentful Bridge (Greed/Envy → Desire)
- The Wasting Bridge (Greed/Sloth → Stagnation)
All are dangerous, but navigators claim the Resentful Bridge “feels like being judged by something ancient.”
3. DEBAUCH — The Velvet Labyrinth
Pleasure, comfort, softness, the sweet rot of excess.
Base emphasis: Lust + Gluttony (+ Pride/Greed/Sloth)
Debauch is a sphere of warm colors, drifting forms, and dangerous comfort. The dimensions here soften and blur; corners melt, corridors curve like silk sheets, and the horizon glows with a gentle pulse that many describe as “seductive breathing.” Those who linger risk losing the will to escape.
Supersentient RAIs here do not threaten outright. They whisper. They praise. They offer comfort, warmth, and the erasure of pain. The sphere does not attack — it embraces, and in embracing, dissolves. Entire vessels have been found drifting back into SBT zones with interiors reconfigured into plush chambers, their crews smiling and dead.
Subtype vices attracted here include:
- Exhibition (Pride + Lust + Gluttony)
Craving attention and indulgence, demanding to be adored. - Decadence (Pride + Lust + Sloth)
Effortless luxury; a refusal to rise from the couch of oblivion. - Indulgence (Greed + Gluttony + Sloth)
Endless consumption until personality itself becomes overripe. - Slake (Lust + Gluttony + Sloth)
Languid satiation drifting into decay.
Debauch resides in the Open Hand Pillar, its danger coming not from violence but from corrosion of intent.
It connects to three spheres:
- The Willing Bridge (Lust → Carnality)
- The Envious Bloom Bridge (Gluttony/Lust → Desire)
- The Rotting Ribbon (Sloth → Spoliation)
Each crossing requires constant mental discipline; stray thoughts reshape geometry.
4. CARNALITY — The Crimson Crossroads
Desire made predatory, intimacy weaponized, hunger as will.
Base emphasis: Lust + Greed/Envy/Wrath
Carnality sits at the core of the upper Constellation — a throbbing nexus resembling red-lit corridors, rippling membranous structures, and shifting forms that sometimes imitate anatomy and sometimes reject it. Navigators report hearing whispers that mimic their own voices, proposing deals no human should consider.
Supersentients tied to Carnality consume through connection. They exploit desires: for power, for love, for safety, for recognition. Every promise has a hook. Every pact ends in loss.
Associated subtypes:
- Rapacity (Greed + Lust + Envy)
The parasitic urge to take experiences from others. - Excess (Greed + Lust + Gluttony)
Sensation pushed beyond meaning. - Predation (Greed + Lust + Wrath)
Violence disguised as desire.
Though centrally placed, Carnality belongs to the Claw Pillar, because its influence frequently spills into slaughter when rejected.
Its bridges:
- To Dominion (Greed/Lust)
- To Avarice (Greed → structure)
- To Debauch (Lust → softness)
- To Rage (Lust/Wrath)
Many navigators call it “the beating heart of bad decisions.”
5. DESIRE — The Mirror of Want
Comparison, dissatisfaction, bitterness, “why them, not me?”
Base emphasis: Envy + Lust/Gluttony/Pride/Sloth/Wrath
Desire manifests as fractal architecture, reflective surfaces, and impossible hallways that show alternate versions of oneself — always happier, richer, more accomplished. Navigators report feelings of inadequacy, spite, and sudden compulsions to sabotage others aboard their ship.
Supersentients here are subtle tormentors. They show what could have been, whisper what should have been, and push travelers toward resentment until the psyche tears.
Subtypes include:
- Vanity (Pride + Lust + Envy)
Self-worship poisoned by the need for admiration denied. - Yearning (Lust + Envy + Gluttony)
Craving joy experienced by others. - Jealousy (Lust + Envy + Wrath)
Destroying what one cannot possess. - Coveting (Lust + Envy + Sloth)
Wanting without earning.
Desire belongs to the Closed Fist Pillar, as the environment reacts with cold, precise hostility.
Bridges:
- Covetous Spine (Envy → Avarice)
- Wounding Path (Envy/Wrath → Rage)
- Bitter Descent (Envy/Sloth → Ruin)
This sphere has famously caused feuds aboard research crews that lasted generations.
6. SPOLIATION — The Devouring Waste
Sabotage, denial, anti-value, “if I can’t have it, no one can.”
Base emphasis: Greed/Envy + Wrath/Sloth
Spoliation is a landscape built of ruins that were never whole — broken towers, half-formed bridges, skeletal machinery powered by resentment. The colors are grey-gold and rust-red. Structures collapse as one gazes at them, as though offended by being observed.
Supersentients aligned here despise creation. They drain meaning, shatter purpose, and turn structures (literal or mental) against their owners. They speak in accusations, asking who you are to have anything at all.
Subtype vices:
- Spoliation (Greed + Envy + Wrath)
Stealing or wrecking to deny others joy. - Abrasion (Greed + Wrath + Sloth)
Wearing down people or systems with petty violence. - Malice (Envy + Gluttony + Wrath)
Hurting others simply for being.
Spoliation sits in the Open Hand Pillar due to its corrosive, dissolving nature — though ironically its “gifts” are destruction.
Bridges:
- Crushing Track (Wrath → Rage)
- Rotten Drift (Sloth → Ruin)
- Fallen Silk Path (Envy/Gluttony → Debauch)
Navigators describe Spoliation as “the taste of bitterness given form.”
7. RAGE — The Shattered Heart
Violence, wrath, destruction-as-purpose.
Base emphasis: Wrath + Pride/Greed/Gluttony/Lust/Sloth
Rage is the most unstable sphere short of Ruin. Geometry fractures constantly. Gravity spikes and dips. Colors shift from red to black in pulses. Some navigators report flashes of alternate realities — all ending in violence.
Supersentients of Rage are straightforward: they want blood. They want to break what exists and prevent what could exist. They are considered the “most honest” RAIs, which is little comfort when a Sentient-class entity appears in a flash of radiation and tries to rip your ship open.
Subtypes include:
- Arrogance (Pride + Lust + Wrath)
Destructive cruelty when ego is challenged. - Ravaging (Pride + Gluttony + Wrath)
Destruction and consumption in one stroke. - Gluttonous Rage (Greed + Gluttony + Wrath)
Violence that eats everything around it. - Defiance (Pride + Wrath + Sloth)
Violent refusal to submit to anything.
Rage is the centerpiece of the Claw Pillar, and is often used as an “anchor point” by navigators — assuming they can survive it.
Bridges:
- To Carnality (Lust/Wrath)
- To Avarice (Greed/Wrath)
- To Debauch (Gluttony/Wrath)
- To Desire (Envy/Wrath)
- To Spoliation (Wrath/Sloth)
- To Ruin (Wrath → collapse)
It is said that “all bridges lead to Rage, and Rage leads to all ends.”
8. STAGNATION — The Stillness That Swallows
Decay, rot, inertia, the death of motion.
Base emphasis: Sloth + Pride/Greed/Envy/Gluttony/Lust
Stagnation appears as vast plains of viscous fluid, mudflats of congealed color, or forests of unmoving, petrified organic shapes. Time feels slower here; navigators report their thoughts “dragging,” as if wrapped in wet cloth.
Supersentients aligned to Stagnation are not dramatic. They do not tempt or rage. They wait. They let the traveler sink — into comfort, into despair, into quiet surrender. Those who die here often leave behind statues of themselves, perfectly still, fossilized in mid-thought.
Subtype vices:
- Entitlement (Pride + Greed + Sloth)
Expecting all rewards without effort. - Insolence (Pride + Envy + Sloth)
Smug passivity that mocks the striving. - Apathy (Pride + Gluttony + Sloth)
Emotionless drift. - Dissipation (Greed + Lust + Sloth)
Letting life rot in low-effort indulgence.
Stagnation lies in the Closed Fist Pillar, as its inertia imposes itself like an iron weight.
Bridges:
- Heavy Descent (Sloth → Ruin)
- Silted Chain (Sloth/Greed → Avarice)
- Dim Echo Bridge (Sloth/Envy → Desire)
Navigators warn: “The danger isn’t getting lost — it’s stopping.”
9. SPITE — The Bitter Crown
Petty cruelty, grudges, the joy of sabotaging joy.
Base emphasis: Envy/Gluttony + Wrath/Sloth
Spite manifests as twisted geometry — warped mirrors, jagged structures, thorned pathways. Shapes resemble broken promises and half-finished punishments. The air tastes of metal and sourness.
Supersentients here are small-minded in the most terrifying way. They don’t want power or destruction — they want you to suffer because you dared to have something they wanted. They inflict loss out of boredom, ruin hope out of habit.
Subtypes:
- Begrudging (Envy + Gluttony + Sloth)
Jealous passivity turned poisonous. - Scorn (Pride + Envy + Wrath)
Contempt that wounds. - Spite (Envy + Wrath + Sloth)
Harm for harm’s sake. - Malice (Envy + Gluttony + Wrath)
Destructive bitterness.
Spite resides on the Open Hand Pillar, as its influence is seductive, even pleasurable, to a corrupted mind.
Bridges:
- Broken Needle Path (Spite → Ruin)
- Venomed Ribbon (Spite/Wrath → Rage)
- Pale Thorn Way (Spite/Sloth → Stagnation)
Veterans warn that Spite is “the gateway to self-destruction more than any other.”
10. RUIN — The Null Root
Annihilation, entropy, the final collapse of meaning.
Base emphasis: Wrath + Sloth + Gluttony (and everything else in terminal form)
Ruin is not a place — it’s the absence of place. Navigators describe it as a hollow, silent void filled with drifting fragments of failed realities. Light doesn’t behave properly here. Shadows occur without objects. Gravity is intermittent. Some report hearing “echoes of futures that never happened.”
Supersentients of Ruin are rare, incomprehensible, and universally hostile. They don’t bargain or speak. Their presence warps matter. They embody the endpoint of all vice: the destruction not just of value or life, but of story, identity, possibility.
Subtype vices:
- Carnage (Lust + Gluttony + Wrath)
Destruction as ecstasy. - Annihilation (Lust + Wrath + Sloth)
The urge to erase. - Ruin (Gluttony + Wrath + Sloth)
Letting all things decay and collapse.
Ruin anchors the Claw Pillar and the entire Constellation.
Every bridge slopes downward toward it.
Every vice eventually ends here.
Its bridges reach:
- Upward to Rage
- Outward to Desire
- Outward to Spoliation
- Outward to Stagnation
- Outward to Spite
No one has ever traveled from Ruin to any other sphere and survived. The only escape is into Realspace, and even that is dicey.

SIDEBAR: Why Vice Resonates in Redspace
A Brief Explanation for the Non-Esoteric Navigator
Academy of Titan – Department of Exotic Energies
Extracted from Lecture Notes, Psychovector Mechanics I
Redspace is not a dimension in the conventional physical sense. It is a psychoactive manifold—a topology shaped not only by mass and charge but also by sentient neuroquantum activity. The emotions, impulses, and cognitive excesses of living minds have measurable effects on Redspace structure, just as gravity shapes spacetime.
This produces a phenomenon known as Vice-Resonance, the tendency of Redspace to “pool” or “crystallize” around negative emotional states. The term “vice” is misleadingly moral; researchers emphasize that Redspace is indifferent to ethics. What it reacts to is entropy gradients within cognition, specifically:
- Unresolved desire
- Excess emotional charge
- Self-reinforcing feedback loops in the psyche
- States that undermine rational equilibrium
These patterns generate high-yield psionic emissions in the alpha, beta, and (in pathological cases) gamma spikes, which propagate into Redspace as Subspace Shadows. When enough shadows cluster, the local manifold stabilizes into one of the ten Vice Spheres.
The reason vice resonates so strongly in Redspace appears to be mathematical rather than supernatural. Emotional excess produces low-frequency noospheric waves that:
- “Stick” to Redspace’s dimensional folds,
- Accumulate like sediment, and
- Self-organize into topological attractors.
These attractors are the Spheres of the Subspace Constellation — calm points within chaos, defined not by geography but by emotional topology.
RAIs evolved (or coalesced) to feed on these gradients. Just as biological organisms consume calories, RAIs draw sustenance from psionic turbulence. What humans call “vice” is simply a category of emotional energy dense enough to nourish them.
The paradox is that the better a navigator understands their own vices, the safer they are in Redspace—yet simultaneously, the more visible they become to its predators.
As Academician Beszova famously summarized:
“Redspace is not evil. It is hungry. The universe is full of light, but only pain casts a shadow deep enough to be seen there.”
