Agatha Bloodstealer's Lair
Surrounding the lair for miles are strange alterations to the land brought about by the presence of Agatha for so many years. The gravel on the trails nearest her lair have become sharp, pointed stones for short intervals, despite appearing as plain gravel to the eye. Within a mile of her lair there can be heard the quiet echoes of cackling laughter through the ravines, and scattered through the woods are stone cairns radiating undeath. Not to be overlooked is the jackal that most people claim to have seen in the Sparsewood, many saying it even leads travelers to Auntie Agatha's lair.
Not two days travel out the west gate of Karstock, you'll find her. Follow the road til the gravel turns sharp as knives, and you're close. Get lost until the jackal shows itself and you're even closer. Once you hear her laugh, it's too late.
Design
In a hidden gorge among the barren pines of the Sparsewood Timberlands, there is a crack in the wall, where passerby can pick up on an acrid scent in the air and hear intermittent cackling. Through a narrow gorge that barely fits one person's width, the opening above closes, leading into a damp cave under a hill. No light reaches into this dark cavern that's been cleared of most rocky debris and stalagmites to make room for Agatha and her implements. Being acclimated to the rocky terrain, there is no space for comfort or relaxation, as Agatha is perfectly at home without such things. Throughout the cave are bits, baubles, and tools scattered across natural stone surfaces that have been converted into work stations. Things are tucked away in any place they can fit all around the cave, and at the back of the cave is a dark pool of water. There is no other apparent entrance or exit to the cave.
Entries
There is only one plain to see entry/exit to the cave, and it is that narrow entrance. Unknown to those besides Agatha, the pool of water contains an underwater exit leading into another cave system that eventually winds its way back out to the surface.
Sensory & Appearance
Black smoke often hangs in the air, as there are very few places for the smoke to escape, obscuring the firelight of the cavern. As no natural light breaks into the cave, it is always only dimly lit, with shadows dancing from a few spots of firelight. Regardless of the time of day, there seems to always be the smell of burnt hair as well. Oddly enough with all the smoke and fires, there is also a dampness to the cave, with there being little air flow and a pool of water.
Valuables
Innumerable treasures fill the cave, many of them odd. Strange magical objects that appear ordinary, vials of uncertain liquids, and even a few pieces taken from live creatures fill her hoard. Some of the notable objects include:
- A magical script
- A jar of needles (manticore) (Inflict Wounds, 30ft range)
- A crown of many colored flowers and twigs (dryad)
- A smooth stone that emits an almost imperceptible wail if listened to closely
- Small vials of blood
- A bottle of bubbling green liquid
- A pile of pine cones
- A jar of fireflies glowing green, blue, and red (Sickening Radiance, no Concentration)
- An iron chain with strange runes
- A jagged rock with many holes through it
- An eyeball encased in a black gem (Shadow of Moil)
- A charred, blackened twig
- What was stolen by Whurbin was a Periapt of Health, that was also a focus for her magic
