After several years of growing disdain for her husband's conquest, Aristeia Patrice Brannigan pleads with Atoli to stop. Placing his mission above his love, he kills his wife in front of his now four-year old daughter. It is a decision he regrets for the rest of his life.
In secret, a second child is born to Atoli, an assurance of his lineage living on. He is called Swain Brannigan.
Dirodil Blackleaf comes to Ze'Duun in disguise. He meets the now adult daughter of Atoli, Felicity. The two fall in love, and she conceives. Soon after, Dirodil is discovered and driven from the city.

A resistance against The Zederah is formed, led by the Child of Water, Deluge, the construct Morton, and the barbarian Backbreaker.
After much planning, a counter-offensive is mounted against Ze'Duun. The bulk of the resistance draws soldiers to the front while a smaller party infiltrates the city to assassinate Atoli. Ultimately, this battle spells the end of Zederah Tyranny.
After a battle in his throne room, Atoli is slain by his granddaughter, Aristeia.
In the wake of their leader's death, many Zederah soldiers flee or surrender, fracturing their crucial unity. The Zederah are reduced to paltry bands still clinging to a wicked dream.
