Numenite is the term used to refer to a type of crystalline mineral that exhibits strong, magical emanations in connection with some deity.
Properties
Certain types of crystals can be charged with magical energy, a property called magical capacitance. When paired with certain devices, these crystals act as batteries that then give off that magical energy over a period of time. Numenite crystals behave in a similar fashion in that they give off varying rates and strengths of magical energy, specifically divine-leaning magical energy. Unlike other crystals capable of magical capacitance, numenite crystals never seem to fully deplete or need to be charged.
The origin of numenite is not publicly known. They're assumed to be naturally forming to some extent, though their particular flavor of divine magical emanation and seemingly limitless output insinuates potential deifaction or at least a process in some part of deific nature.
History & Usage
Numenite isn't widely used outside of research purposes, though the
KDD has recently developed new methods of safely harnessing numenite energy to power
Airships. Airships require a large amount of steady magical energy to keep afloat over long periods of time and travel, generally making airship travel very intentional and restrictive. These new prototype airships that take advantage of the virtually limitless energy of numenite have begun to show promise to more accessible travel via airship.
Smaller numenite crystals and shards present the same minor hazards as standard crystals capable of magical capacitance: generally safe though can be made slightly dangerous through either improper application of magical energy to the crystal or improper consumption of stored magical energy.
Larger numenite crystals have much more unpredictable effects which increase in probability with proximity to the crystal. Reported hazards have varied from headaches to misfired or modified spell effects. Long term effects of exposure in this manner are still being researched.
Numenite's ability to replenish its magical power stores is still being researched by the KDD. To those keeping up with published research, it is understood to be a theoretically limitlessly reusable magical energy source.
