New York City
Located in the United States of North America
New York City, also known as the Big Apple, is the largest city in the former United States and the second largest city in the United States of North America. New York City is home to many important organizations in the USNA, but none are more significant than the United Nations headquarters located in Upper Midtown Manhattan. Constructed in the location of the original building, the modern UN headquarters was completed in 2101 after the original building was compromised in a failed bombing attempt in 2093. New York City is an extremely dense metropolitan area as it home to over 17.53 million inhabitants, with more in the suburban areas that surround the city.
To be home to the incredible number of people that it is, New York City followed in the steps of Beijing by constructing a new surface over the original city. Becoming a stacked city, colloquially known as a "Cake City", this created the distinctive Upper and Lower sections of New York. The Lower section is made up of the original buildings that have foundations actually on the ground, while the Upper section consists of buildings and infrastructure constructed over it. So called "Cake Cities", are common acrossed the United States of North America, the European Union, and the Asian Commonwealth.
Districts
Home to the more affluent portion of the population within New York City, the Upper section of the city is known for its impressively sized buildings, with many reaching over 700 meters. Of course, that is including the initial height of the entire Upper section, on average 100 meters above the true ground level. Upper New York is quite beautiful and unique in architecture, as many different cultures across Terra call the city home. Even one of the most iconic buildings of Upper New York, the Empire State Building, has been upgraded to fit with in the modern 23rd century skyscrapers. The outskirts of the Upper section is also the location of one of the SSTO launch and recovery centers, or better known as The Spaceport by the locals.
Lower New York City:In a suffering twilight during the day and in pitch black at night, the Lower section of New York City consists of all infrastructure between ground level to 100 meters above the surface. Although comprised of less total area than the Upper section, Lower New York City is home to around 75 percent of the total population. Most are just common UN citizens that are trying their best to make it in a crowded and chaotic city, with many cultures contributing to the melting pot that makes up the modern city. There are even sections of the Lower City that are home to those of Lunar or Belter descent. However, this large population has made it hard on law enforcement to keep crime to a minimum, but the crime rate is still better than some portions of Ceres Station. Speaking of which, Lower New York City is one of the only places that the Skulk has operatives doing business with the gangs and criminal organizations of Terra.
