The Shielded Lands

Located in the southwest part of Estier, this peaceful region is largely independent and egalitarian.

Geography

The Shielded Lands are bordered on all sides by the impenetrable Shield Mountains. The only gap is along the peninsula to the southwest, where the city of Teosinte provides access to the rest of the world. North of Teosinte is an oak savannah, with sporadic villages along the roads. Then the Eye, the deepest known lake on Tephra. As you trek northeast from the Eye, the land grows drier and steeper, until some scenic canyons and badlands rise into the northern Shield Mountains. Further east, you are forced to follow glacial rivers south into the cooler regions of the Shielded Lands, stopping overnight in farm towns and mining towns which symbiotically depend on each other. In the far southeast, Marasmus is the last bastion of civilization before you turn west into the Stillwood. If you stay on the path, and follow the rules, there is one safe way through to Teosinte on the other side, where you gratefully conclude your tour.

Localized Phenomena

The Shielded Lands have very little wind and rain normally, relying on groundwater and the melting of glaciers in the Shield Mountains. There are plenty of interesting stones, revealed in the canyons or found by orcs in their underground settlements. Some are able to become enchanted, while others already have ambient magic and resonate with the power of creation. Stonework, for these orcs, is very important.

Fauna & Flora

The isolated and enclosed ecosystem has led to most large animals becoming smaller, while small animals became larger. Usually, this isn't enough to be truly alarming, but some visitors are curious to see squirrels the size of cats, miniature horses, and other charming creatures.
