The Five Great Wyrms
In the early days after creation, the first dragons came into being. Perhaps there was more power available for them than for the dragons of today, because each of the five was a legendary creature, able to challenge gods and erase nations. And in a frightening coincidence, the legends trace all five to the end of their path in the The Shielded Lands.
Summary
Vaeriarytoth, the Massacre Dancer, had an infinite hunger. The black dragon carried a thousand plagues on the wind of his wings, and feasted on the dead with terrible joy. It took immense arcane effort by a forgotten mage and their seven apprentices to find Vaeriarytoth asleep and bind him under seven thousand runes of power. They say only one apprentice survived the rituals, and warned the orcs living near the lake called the Eye to keep a careful watch on the wyrm's resting place.
Mordelios, the Sundering Flame, was not content with earthly power. His breath turned mountains to smoke and ash, but the fear and worship of mortals grew stale. Glowing like a second Sun, the red dragon soared higher until he burst through the planes into the World Above. But though he rained down the blood of angels in their armies, Mordelios could not stand alone against the newly ascended demigods: Bastet, Wee Jas and Siamorphe. His heart was torn out and hurled deep into the core of the world, where it still beats.
Eingana Mara, the Shadespeaker, planned to make the gnomes of Estier into her own client species, trapping them within her illusions and tormenting them with the promise of freedom. In despair, they prayed to Segojan Earthcaller and were delivered. While the god of death could not intervene in the world with force, he could give the blue dragon all the power she wanted. Eingana Mara gained dominion over the path back from the afterlife, and reveled in her newfound authority. But over time, the responsibility of answering rituals, judging necromancers and watching the veils of the spirit realm took up all of her time. Ironically, many gnomes do honor her for her service to Segojan now. And somewhere in the dry north of the Shielded Lands, her oasis of shadows hides behind glamours and otherworldly deceptions.
Cydoraxion, the Lamented Sovereign, went about in the shape of humans, dwarves, and Elves more than he wore his own green dragon skin. In a dozen names and a hundred cities, he shaped the course of history and established networks of spies. Some mystery cults and intelligence organizations claim to be descended from the followers of Cydoraxion, which means there are probably many more who don't even know why they've collected secrets for ten thousand years. The very wise and the very paranoid say that at the right word, political dominoes could fall and plunge the world into a new era. But the dragon is in no state to give that word, since he fell into the clutches of the Elves in the southern forest. Many hope for his return, and many more fear it.
Historical Basis
The lake of the Eye is so deep nobody has reached the bottom. If there was a place to hide a mile-long dragon, this would be a good start.
Devotees of Segojan do say prayers to Eingana Mara, hoping she will intercede and approve a resurrection spell. Most commonly, she is invoked at seances. If this spiritual figure is indeed a great wyrm, nobody can confirm it.
Some scholars try to trace the travels of Cydoraxion, but history that old is hard to find. There are myths of a wandering sage or hero in every land and culture, and sorting out which ones refer to a shapeshifter is probably a fool's errand.
Variations & Mutation
One secret society, the Star Singers of Teosinte, claims that Cydoraxion is dead and a worthy heir - dragon or not - will be able to revive his vast legacy.
