Edge of Night
The general title for campaigns set during the Abeyance, when Tephra ceases to move in its orbit. There are a few major conflict arcs, each of which can be its own campaign.
Themes
Darkness. Ingenuity. Adapting to New Environments. Apocalypse. Mystery.
Structure
Exposition
The Abeyance is the result of a plot among the Founding Pantheon, where one god overstepped (or finally lived up to) his title and domain. Nerull, the Reaper, the Foe of All Life, decided to strike down the goddess Ianke and disrupt the order of time and space. The resulting chaos and destruction, he hoped, would leave Tephra a graveyard.
Conflict
Across Dorend, various cities and groups react in different ways to the onset of endless night. An Edge of Night campaign will take this into consideration and imagine how protagonists might stand up against the machinations of Nerull or the conflicting interests of worldly powers. Here are four examples, in brief:
Fangs of Famine is centered on Kirohyne , where the Dread Lord imposes strict rules and encourages magical experimentation to grow food for the huge population. Player characters may interact with his goals and the new state church of Siamorphe in different ways. Eventually, the ravening kythons awaken to besiege the city, which pushes the politics of food even further. Can the players reveal the Horseman of Famine and solve all these problems?
Whispers of War is set in the northeast of Dorend, and will involve wilderness survival and military maneuvers. Orcs are resigning and traveling en masse to the first Orcmoot in centuries. They're trying to choose a leader, an Orc Magnate to unite the different bands and companies. Meanwhile, the city of Myridos is taking this threat as an opportunity to seize land and conquer neighbors who are "collaborating", all with the help of their new mind flayer allies. Which side are the players on? Can they vanquish the Horseman of War?
Portrait of Pestilence takes place in Kobir and the Hopewell area, where a deadly plague is spreading. The city council pursues several cures, but agents of Nerull and his Horseman of Pestilence sabotage them at every turn. One inventor has a solution: if they can't save the body, they can preserve the soul using an artificial afterlife located in mirrors. You can even enter and exit while still alive, to visit those you've lost. But use of the mirror dimension proves to spread like a disease itself - or a cult. Can the players get to the bottom of this?
Dominion of Death is a high-level conclusion to the Edge of Night series. It has been years since the endless darkness fell on Dorend. New conflicts, like a religious and cultural pressure from Estier's yuan-ti Sun worshippers, seem to push the continent ever closer to destruction (it could be fun to see how the earlier campaigns affected the landscape). The gods finally reveal Nerull's murder of Ianke, and the players learn she has been reduced to a mortal with no memories. Can they reach her before the Reaper's agents finish the job? Can they enter the divine domain of Ianke in the World Above and defeat the Horseman of Death? It will take great heroes to restore the goddess to her power.
