Kirohyne (rhymes with mirror-vine)

The dusty jewel of Dorend, built on the bones of a lost empire. This is a city trying to grow into its future.

Demographics

Humans 40%, Dwarves 15%, Orcs 15%, Halflings 10%, Lizardfolk 10%, Other (Elves, gnomes, goblins, undead) 10%

Government

The modern citizens of Kirohyne elected a few people to the position of "Lord Mayor" which was a position held for life. However, becoming Lord Mayor was often a way to dramatically reduce one's lifespan, and political feuds led to plenty of collateral damage. So when the immortal lich-king Kiroqatsis awoke and ran for office, the weary voters cheered him on. The Dread Lord has now held power for over 80 years.

Defences

Kirohyne has ancient walls which have fallen into disrepair over a few thousand years. The Dread Lord has been able to awaken or construct some magical wards on certain structures, but the real strength of the city is in its legions of the dead. For a tax deduction, citizens give permission to raise the bodies of their family members as skeletal soldiers.

Infrastructure

The modern residents of Kirohyne have built houses where broad roads used to be, and cut new alleys through ancient buildings and statues. Barges crawl up and down the river, delivering goods. Recently, there has been an effort to expand and repair the old canal system. An entire district of the city, Portside, is dedicated to unloading and loading the ships that come in from Kobir and the ports of Estier. And the most visible monument is a cyclopean bridge spanning the Brickyard, with shops built up top and wooden shanties crawling up the support pillars.

Districts

Visitors arriving through the northeast gate are often deceptively charmed by Lesser North Splot, a residential neighborhood centered on the famed Splot Park. While the park is a bastion of green space carved out of the city, there are more than a few opportunistic vendors and petty criminals waiting to pounce on new arrivals. The people who live here are mainly factory workers, clerks, and a few small business owners.
Radlam Heights is a bustling neighborhood of workshops and apartments. This is where carpenters, smiths, weavers and the like ply their trade, often living in their upstairs rooms. You can also get the freshest baked goods here, since the bakers of Radlam Heights buy flour as soon as it enters through the northwest gate.
Tweabolton is an oddity as the local shops all see a lot of business from Kirohyne University's students and faculty. Founded soon after modern settlement began, the University's magic program attracts students from all over Dorend and even farther. This makes Tweabolton a very diverse neighborhood as visitors see new languages and faces every day. Smaller colleges have also emerged here, taking advantage of the district's character.
The Point has all of Kirohyne's dirty and unwanted industries, from rendering whales and packing fish to tanning leather and forging iron.
The Brickyard is a wonder and an eyesore in a single glance.
Bayside handles shipping and sailors.
Southgarden is in the shadow of the Dread Lord's palace, and wealthy citizens have restored or built fine houses in this district.

History

Long ago, Kirohyne was a thriving human city at the center of a large kingdom. Powerful rulers had great palaces and monuments built from the stone of the quarry here. But something went wrong. Whether it was the Scouring of Dorend or the legendary Lolth, some force left the city abandoned for thousands of years, until settlers from Estier arrived to build their own homes. They adopted and used the natural port, the ancient walls, and even the sleeping undead ruler, forging a new identity and a strong economy.

Climate

A strong ocean breeze hits the Point and Bayside districts, but the rest of the city is usually too hot in the summer, too cold in the winter, and always breathing in the reek of the polluted river.

Make sure to avoid the attention of the Shades, a small team of undead detectives. They usually assist the regular city watch with tough cases, but can also be found investigating "treasonous activity" which is a very vague crime in Kirohyne. The Shades are so named because they wear tinted glasses to hide their horrible eyes from innocent citizens, but after dark it's not uncommon to look down an alley and see the red glare of a finely dressed wight and its tracking-ghoul, on the Dread Lord's official business.
