Aelvise (Aye-el-VEE-say)

The Aelvise are an alien race from a conjoined world that is tied to Earth through connecting Dormeau Arches.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The Aeilvise are able to see and control magical energy. Their abilities vary from individual to individual and according to whether they are of one of the Noble/Royal lines, or whether they are of Commoner lines.

Civilization and Culture

Culture and Cultural Heritage

The Aelvise have a complicated and intricate social structure that is primarily matriarchal, with distinct racial capabilities tied to the extent that one has royal, noble, or common lineage lines.

In addition, Aelvise society is subtle and difficult for those not of the culture to navigate, with a million little rules that allow for insult to be taken, or debt to be incurred (or levied) at the most minimal of remarks, activities, or behaviors. Insult is easily taken, and grudges are held for generations.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

Among the most critical things to know about the Aelvise is that their society is designed to trap and ensnare victims for them to use as they see fit. There are a million ways to cross an Aelvise, and few ways to extricate oneself once one has been caught.

Just one example of this is in the process of common human behaviors. It is considered good manners among humans to say things like 'please' and, especially 'thank you' -- but to offer gratitude to an Aelvise is to place yourself at the command of the one to whom you offer gratitude -- the Aelvise consider this an admission of your debt to them, and they can force that debt to be repayed in any way that they choose, when the time is right for them. They will not even acknowledge that you've gotten yourself into trouble until they show up on your doorstep and demand payment for a favor done -generations- before that your ancestor put himself in their debt over (In other words, Great-Great-Grandpa Joe said 'thank you' to an Aelvise for helping him get his wagon out of a ditch -- now his great-great grandkid owes the Aelvise anything they want.)

In another equally problematic example, the Aelvise cannot outright lie. They can skirt around an answer, so as not to break this law, leaving vague responses that don't really -answer- the question, but also don't NOT answer it. If you corner an Aelvise into answering a question that they don't want to answer, that may be considered in the same vein as beating them up, and if you LIE to an Aelvise, either by commission or omission, they will consider that justification for any number of torments levied against you and your family, from curses to death.
